Tethering via Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
Tethering via Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
I know this may be considered a no-no, but I really have not gotten any feedback and really hope to get this working soon. FYI, I moved my posts from the topic, List of Bluetooth tethering phones that works.
I am having difficulty getting my Blackberry Bold to tether. I can get the pair but no connect even though I see my phone switch to Modem Mode. I know the Storm users can tether but I think if we get a solution here, we can get tethering working for all Blackberry users. I tried tethering a Storm but could not get it to connect so I have no idea what I am doing wrong on that front.
Refer to my posts below for details of my steps.
And apparently, SingTel informed me that I do not have to sign up for tethering, but I will just be charged when I use it.
Details of the phones I tried.
Blackberry Bold - OS 4.6.0.292
Blackberry Storm - OS 4.7.0.75
My Archos is using the 1.2.15 firmware.

Re: Tethering with Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
I moved this post from the topic - List of Bluetooth tethering phones that work (http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=26482).
So, after trying and trying to get the Bluetooth tethering on my BB Bold to work, I think I have narrowed it down to an APN configuration problem. I looked up and found a couple of different APNs for SingTel but none of them seem to work. I have found some sites that say use APN A with user and pass, and some say use APN A without user and pass. Others say try APN B, again with and without user / pass. I have also tried removing APN name from the Archos completely. I have also tried changing the Blackberry APN settings (Options -> Advanced -> TCP/IP) to APN A, APN B, and even removing it but nothing seems to work. One good thing is even if I delete all the APN settings, I can still use the internet on the phone itself. I have a BIS subscription for my Blackberry, so I guess APN is not needed for internet access.
Referring back to the Archos though, at least I know it is trying to tether because every time I try to connect, I see the Bluetooth icon with little transmit arrows on the Blackberry, I also see the little diagonal arrows in the upper right of the Blackberry screen indicating that there is data traffic, and my provider name changes from SingTel to Modem Mode Enabled but with each setting I have tried, the A5A says it is unable to tether. And yes, I have tried having the same settings on both the Archos and Blackberry. Nuthin!
Just for reference:
SingTel APN: internet (or e-ideas)
user: 65IDEAS (or blank)
pass: IDEAS (or blank or possibly in all lowercase)
I find multiple APN settings from SingTel users on the interwebs so I am really not sure which to use. The best reference would be SingTel themselves, but I don't have time to verify right now. I know that they have a service called Broadband over Mobile (which is supposed to use the APN settings for internet access/tethering) but you can just use the service as a pay per use rather than a monthly service. I want to make sure it works properly before I start a monthly service. I hope I don't have to call so they can activate the ability to even access the service. I will feel like a big idiot.
So following up, would anyone care to share if they have specific APN settings in their Blackberry? I know you may not be using SingTel, but it might lead me in the right direction as far making sure that I need them. And, are you putting these same APN settings into the Archos?

Tried it with a Curve 8900 on OS 4.6.1.168. The unit connects, the Blue tooth icon appears and the little arrows show data then the unit reboots so I am guessing its a no go.

Does the phone or Archos reboot?

Sorry I wasn't clear the Blackberry reboots.
Re: Tethering via Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
Hmm, my phone does not reboot, not sure what is going on with yours. Mine just switches to modem mode and then back into regular phone mode when the Archos indicates a failure to tether.
Have you tried upgrading the OS on your phone, if you are not already using an upgraded one?

what u mean they will charge u when u use tethering
Re: Tethering via Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
So Singtel allows you to tether a laptop or device like the A5A but you have to have a seperate plan for it. I have a 3GB Blackberry Internet Service plan but if I tether, I cannot use these 3 GB. I would get charged, by Singtel, for data usage unless I add on a plan to give some allowed data for tethering.

Re: Tethering via Bluetooth with a Blackberry - HELP!
I haven't yet bought an Archos 5 but am quite close to it at this point. I've been poking around to see what can/cant be done with this thing. I've two thoughts that may already been answered but...
Those with IPhones why not jailbreak (or not with the correct software.. google will help) and turn your phone into a hotspot?
I run an application call "Tether" on my blackberry that allows me to well tether it to my PC and share the internet without paying tethering fees to my carrier! Tether also have an application for... Android but as I don't have a Archos yet I don't know if the two work. I think the original idea was to take the internet from the phone either blackberry or android and send it to a windows box. In the event no one has tried this yet.. luckily for those with a blackberry and an Archos you can get a free trial over at http://www.tether.com try it out see if it works.. I expect it wont as I'd expect both applications may try and grab the net and serve it out via USB/Bluetooth? Just a theory but I've no way to test it.
On a side note just in case that idea doesn't work I've put the very same question to the people behind tether can it be done or could they release an update to make it happen! That is working on the assumption that Tether on the Android will expect to act as a server and has no client side to it. I could very well be wrong here which I hope I am because that would mean it would work!
