I only got to download .avi files when I entered google.video thru my kubuntu-linux notebook. Other than that, I could only download/view videos with the google video player. I guess that's because googles video player ain't available for linux yet.

Which button do you click to get the .avi file?

The Download button on a Windows machine gets a .gvi file doesn't it..

Where an ipod/psp .mp4 version is also available most of the time, that is compatible with Archos podcast plugin, but that you have to do an extra click to get that one.

These are the steps I used to get AVI files from Google Video

1.You must use your archos 604 wifi and follow these steps
2. In the Archos search area(using google) of the Opera browser I type in Video
3. Then went to video google
4. Search for a video like a video white and nerdy
5. You have to scroll down on the bottom right part of the screen with the stylus
6. Click download for windows and mac
7.Your avi will download no gvi is every downloaded.

I used those steps on three different music videos now and it works fine. I may even try to buy some content from there and let you know how that goes.

Of course you do. The firmware is linux-based. That's why google is smart enough, not to offer the gvi (google video) file. Even if you hit the "Download Windows/Mac" button it gives you the avi. As I said earlier, this will only work as long as google hasn't found a way to play gvi on linux machines.

I haven't done it in quit a while but I have downloaded many AVIs from Google Video with my 604wifi. I only wish more people would upload to Google Video. Their selection isn't nearly as extensive as uTube's.

Note that the original post was from year 2006. Sometime in the autumn of 2007, Google removed the avi downloads. The PSP download doesn't work either.

My solution these days is to use a Firefox addin "Download Helper" and then covert the file from using an application called "FLV to AVI" converter.
