I read that anything recorded can only be transferred to an Archos player via USB.

I guess so only for Macrovision protected content. I don't know if Satellite, Cable TV can be macrovision protected, at least commercial DVDs played in normal DVD players are macrovision protected when output through analog composite video output, unless the DVD players macrovision is disabled. Which means the recording can only be recognized by another Archos since the macrovision people don't want people to record macrovision protected content and copy it on a computer.

Well anything that comes through a proprietary box can be macro visioned at the end.

What I saw somewhere was that the recordings are not DRM'd (except for DVD), but that they can only be transferred from the hard drive via an Archos player, not across a home network.

I'm going to hold off buying this until it comes to a retail store like Sam's or Costco in case I need to return. Seems Archos is becoming tightlipped like Apple and making you purchase before you find out all the negative details.

My feelings exactly. I've been in the market for some type of DVR to connect to my cable box without having to pay another monthly fee. I'm already paying for cable, internet, telephone...why have to pay another fee. Not interested in TIVO or buying another computer to hook to my receiver. Hope this item is the answer. Will wait and see. One thing I've learned is to not buy right away but to wait and learn from other's experiences. I already own an IPOD 80G so I don't need another mp3/4 player. :?

Most anything that uses HDMI will be macrovisioned.
