Hi all,

Just took ownership of my new Arnova 10 G2. I had researched a lot, and there seemed to be a lot to like about this tablet, the specs really are good - i was expecting quite a lot.

It seems though - well - its not really blowing me away ive got to say. The screen i believe is ips - i have an ips monitor so i really was excited by this. But the color rendition really isnt great. If i look at an image with the gallery - if theres a lot of black detail then all the blacks just merge into one level. With video if i play a video that has a dark scene, then i see the tell tale signs of an inferior dispay - blotches and banding in the dark areas. I havent tried a HD video yet, it may be the display is upsizing a smaller video - which is always going to degrade quality. But the poor image quality really is concerning me, it seems images on webpages display better than if they are viewed from the browser. Ive even resized images to 1024x600 to see if that helped - it didnt really. Ive also noticed looking at images in the gallery u can sometimes see faint lines across some areas of the image - but if i press the menu button and then go back to the image they dissapear - so this seems like a bug.

Im using the latest arnova firmware ( i upgraded it to see if it would help the image issue)

Anyone else noticed these dissapointing issues, or have any ideas? For an ips display these issues really shouldnt be there....

Cheers

The new out Arnova 9G2 has an ips screen but unfortunately I think you have been given some
Wrong information with regards to screen on
this model as it is not IPs just standard multitouch.

I know from the stock image viewer there is a delay before you see the full resolution of the image, but looking at the pictures that are already on the tablet image from the firmware they look decent resolution to me. I have not tried to resize my pictures that I have put on the device so I am seeing them at there original resolution, maybe you are losing quality by resizing them especially if they are jpg. Also I have been using Quickpic image viewer from the Android market or Appslib whatever one that you are using, try that viewer to see if you have the same problems. More important put some original photos from your camera with no image processing to see if you notice any difference.

I cant remember seeing any banding that you refer to on my tablet though, so maybe you have a faulty screen?

the banding is in video only it seems, images just seem to not have the full 16 million colours that modern screens should have. im a photographer so compression of jpegs isnt an issue - i only resized to see if it would help, initially i was using full high res files. some images will look fine, if theres not a lot of dark gradients then i imagine there wouldnt be an issue, and typically the images supplied do yes look great - but there is no dark gradients in those, and i imagine they are processed up the whazzo to look great on that screen - which makes sense. ah well a little bit dissapointed, but if thats the way it is, then thats the way it is, just need to learn to lower my expectations. strange that the only media device ive had thats ever played videos as they should is my old archos 605, everything since has been very dissapointing. ive had cheap chinese tablets - yeah those were awful, i tried the archos 7HT - again video quality and colour rendition was poor, i really did think this one would be different. ill use it i gues for browsing, but the intention was to show clients photographs - but its not good enough for that. shame

well....i tried a lord of the rings 700mb rip - and the dark scenes really looked bad. i then tried a 720p rip of the same movie - of course the quality is better as expected....and no banding! so it seems that sub 720p videos will play fine, but due to the scaler in the machine- well, it doesnt seem like a very good scaler- but if the video is 720p up to 1080p its pretty great quality. i tried quickpic as suggested, but alas - not a lot of difference, it seems the colour palatte is slighty limited when it comes to displaying images, which is a damn shame, maybe future updates will fix this! fingers crossed!
