What about the screen troubles?

Post by Nomale »

Hi everyone,
The tab sure looks promising but what is the latest news regarding the ripple/puddle effects on the screen? It would definitely be a deal breaker for me. Any official statements?

The official statement is, that this issue has been resolved in the most recently produced devices. But in fact, I haven't seen any of those "fixed" Archos 80 G9 yet...

Archos has been communicating most info by Facebook.

Official response:

This behavior is not harmful in the long term for the screen of your Tablet Archos, it does not change anything in the product's performance or its longevity, this behavior is common to many products whose shell is soft plastic, and can be found on other products such as the back of the screen of a net book type laptop when a pressure is made on the edges or back of the screen.

Great. Does this mean that if my screen exhibits any sign of permanent damage within the working life of the unit (5 years, say) then Archos will replace my g9 80 for free?

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by the response - especially when it was detailed elsewhere the problem had been resolved - I was hoping for a repair/swap rather than being told to just live with it, it's not an issue.

Does anyone know if the newer units (the turbo and 250Gb HDD versions) are likely to have the fix?

FYI, I emailed Archos about the screen issue recently and received the following response from there ecommerce dept:

~~
Dear sir,
This problem has now been fixed on our next supply.
Cordialement / Best regards
~~

I get the impression, however, that they have still sent out the first (broken?!) batch-runs rather than recall them. In the UK someone reported units from Dixons with the problem, and there appear to be some direct from the Archos store. Personally, I'm waiting for them to arrive in a local shop so I can go and test the unit before purchasing it.

I thought I could probably live with a little warping on the screen, but I accidentally made my laptop screen bubble the other day and it wasn't a nice feeling. I guess it comes down to whether you're comfortable with the small distortion and the reassurances that it wont impact the unit. Shame as I really like the look of the G9. Here's hoping the new units are fixed :)

You know on mine it just isn't that bad. I don't notice it with my regular usage and have to purposefully press on it to make it show up at all. I agree it isn't ideal, but on mine it is really a non-issue.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the 80. I wont be able to grab one for a month or so anyway, so hopefully they will be in the shops then and perhaps, like you say, it wont be an issue.

Thanks.

There are different cases. At the beginning of October I went to a shop and specially looked for bubbles. They only appeared with the 3G stick removed. Because it was october, I think it was from the first batch. Now, Archos store says that G9 is out of stock(including archos home), so I think that the batch with 100% working units is yet on it's way.

This official response doesn't indicate to me that it has been fixed. It seems like they are saying to just live with i t. :(

This is copied from Hotukdeals, sounds like Archos are willing to exchange faulty screen units for new batch;

Can't believe it, got my replacement today and it's even worse! I get the ripple in 2 places when moving my hand around the the back. Will be on the phone to send this one back, not sure if you will allow another replacement or just a refund. Gutted.

I just called Archos on 0207 949 0115, which is there tech support line. The Tech guy said it was an issue and was fixed with the second batch. He said I could send the unit to them, they will send me a replacement unit. Will see what happens to the 3rd replacement from Dixons first.

So are we to assume that the incoming stock on online stores are from batch 2 and up? Should be easy for the retailers to check the batch number shouldn't it? So might be worthwhile to send an email first.
