Good god ... why won't they just include a hard-drive and seal the deal. Or, have an "800" and an 800h; one with and one without.
As it is, depending on the particular user (i.e. are they really dedicated to streaming content vs. having it onhand) this device certainly does seem to offer a better package for SOME potential 604Wifi customers. However, I imagine for many, despite how nice it is, the lack of a harddrive is a 'deal killer'.

I got to interview the Product managers for the N800 at the Nokia tent here at the CES in Las Vegas. I will try to release this video as well as all my other videos on http://ces2007.video-blog.eu and http://stuff.tv by tomorrow or the day after.. This n800 definately looks very impressive, the Opera browser on it is very nice, supports flash video but not perfectly smooth playback, video codec formats and resolution support was not specified but the engineers can get back to me on that on monday..
It will be nice when the Wi-Fi can wake the main cpu and system up when there is an incomming VOIP call, and thus more than just Wi-Fi should also be supported, mobile WiMax and HSDPA will do the whole difference..

Out of curiosity: was there any discussion (by you, or anyone else for that matter) regarding the possibility of having a hard-drive incorporated into the device? Or, why they haven't put a hard-drive into the device?

This is exactly the thread I've been looking for. I'm torn between the N800 and the 604. The problem is
1. Size - these may be too large for what I feel like carrying (But from you guys experience is there any trouble carrying the 604 around?)
2. The N800 has no hard drive! (But 8GB max SD cards, but those would cost more $...)
3. I want a new camera, and I'd rather have one built in. (So I'm considering the 404 cam. But that has no widescreen or wifi or Gizmo Project)
Overall
The N800 has everything I want except the storage space and a camera (a good camera, that is).
The 404 cam has everything I want except the wifi and widescreen.
The 604 has everything I want except the cam and voip phone capability.
So what do you guys think would be a good choice? 404 cam, N800, or 604(wifi)? Any suggestions
Thoughts?

the 404 camcorder is 1.3 megapixel resolution, not nearly good enough to use as a regular digicam, just a nice extra. 604 wifi is pretty svelte for the functionality.

A real competitor for the 604 WiFI?!?!? ... The Chinese H9 UltraMobile PC... 500 MHz ARM processor 20 MB HD (OK that's smaller)... Linux OS, 128 MB RAM, 64 MB ROM, PCMCIA, SD Card Slot, USB, WiFi, GPS capability (not sure if it requires a card), 7" LCD screen, AC97 Audio...
The thing is supposed to have the ability to have its OS modded, unlike the Archos device... Maybe you can even get it with a larger HD... But, 20 GB is as much as my laptop has.

Skype is cool, though no video-skype, you can see a video of the Skype in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LiAzXIsCYY . Flash does not work good enough on the N800 for Youtube, it just isn't smooth even with this new firmware. Though I guess Nokia might achieve smooth flash video if they can find a way to play flash in full screen mode instead of embedded in the browser, though that doesn't seem to be what Nokia can do yet on the N800.

Their has been some updates on the firmware of the n800 so the youtube videos play a little faster also try playing them through orb. The n800 really is only a contender to the 4gb flash 605 wifi it has a leg up on it because of the third party apps that can be added to it but the other 605's are better from a large hard drive stand point. Hopefully the 605 wifi flash will have smooth flash video playback and not stutter or wait for buffering like the n800 does.

N800 does not do Multimedia well. The OMAP chip in there limits video resolution to something like less than 480x360 resolution and forget about B-frames. Youtube is not smooth on N800 with the new firmware..
Although you can synch a HSDPA phone with the N800 using Bluetooth, I think it would make much more sence if Nokia integrated HSDPA into N800, at least offer a version with it. The truth is Nokia won't do it:
1. Carriers don't want Nokia to enable people with VOIP and other Linux apps on the N800 with direct access to the HSDPA networks.
2. Nokia prefers selling two devices (750$ N95 + 400$ N800) for people who want to use HSDPA on their N800.
The perfect product is the one to have Multimedia + WiFi + HSDPA + VOIP into a 4" product just about as compact as the 4" screen. Archos has the best Multimedia and WiFi, Nokia now has WiFi and VOIP. The first to have combined the 4 components into one 4" 150 grams product will win.
And to give people choice for 1.8" HDD (30GB) for +50gr and 2.5" HDD (160GB) for +100gr, also Archos is the only one to enable that.

I don't like the idea of the 2 year contracts.. Here in Denmark it's illegal for companies to have longer than 6 month contracts, I find that to be a great law..
Which WiFi phone are you getting with T-mobile? I'd think the HSDPA is the better thing to get with T-Mobile since you can better use WiFi from an Archos or Nokia N800..

Nokia 6086. I don't like long contracts either but I have to have a cell phone and now I can make calls via wifi and it doesn't cost against my minutes.

Nokia might be adding Mobile WiMAX to the N800 or the next generation N900 Nokia N-series Linux tablet.
That would be cool.
Nokia should have added HSDPA already to the N800, but they aren't cause the cellular providers don't want it, they don't think giving such open source device to their customers fits into their current business model.
