One of the reasons I opted for Archos was that I've read on the internet that it provides a clean Android and that it updates the firmware, keeping up with new Android versions.

Well, it certainly does not!

I would like to have a newer Android for the multiple profiles feature, but it seems that 101 XS will be stuck forever with 4.1.4. It's disappointing.

You read some stuff that is simply wrong in several ways:

Archos certainly does not have a reputation for upgrading its devices to new versions of Android, though it does do so occasionally (usually when that future upgrade has formed part of the marketing i.e. is effectively contractual).

Archos tends to offer on tablets a slightly customised version of Android with enhanced multimedia and windows share browsing capabilities. The phones tend to be very vanilla.

Archos is like almost every other company that supplies devices running Android: you tend to get stuck with the version that came with the device - bug fix firmware updates are expected but that is it.

If you require stock Android with timely updates you need to go for Nexus or Motorola Moto G. Everything else is a gamble.
