This Wiki is great and very useful. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not but wanted to share it in case you like it...

I was in the Wiki because I'm sending back my A5 and my new A5A will be here by the weekend. I was looking for any tips for getting started right. It's possible all this info is there but maybe compiling it in its own section...

How about a section called "Day One" or "Newbie start up tips" that would include newbie things like charge it first and how to tell when it's fully charged, and whether or not to upgrade to the latest firmware and how. Basic configuration stuff. How to add apps w/o using the apps lib included. etc.

Just a thought. I wouldn't presume to try to add this info myself.

Thanks for all the great work you each do to contribute to the community.

The purpose of a wiki is the collaboration of information between users. The idea you have is good, but nobody expects you to know or present all of it. Start the topic with the basic information you learned about sending it back, and then other users over time will expand and refine it.

This is the first time I've ever added to a Wiki. Please let me know if I did anything wrong. I thought the info was relevant to both generations so put the link in both sections. Hope that's OK.

Nicely done! =D>

Some "Newbie Tips":
1. In the Forum reference Wiki changes you made with a URL: Newbie Tips so we don't have to guess about the article you'd like reviewed.
2. Add categories to your article.
----I added the categories: Archos 5A and Archos 5IMT
3. The Main Page only lists Products and should only link to product and Generation pages:
---I moved "Newbie Tips" from the Main Page and put the link in the pages: Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android and Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet
---I also removed the Guy Fawkes Hack from the Main Page for the same reason.
---Additionally, I added pages and categories for Gen6 and Gen7

I added and changed a lot more than I initially intended using the MediaWiki docs for help. And so the beat goes on and, working together, our Wiki keeps getting better and better. :) =D> :)

Sorry about that, I was the one to add it to the front page under Gen 6 since it applied to both devices, but it probably would be better to have a cleaner front page.

I understand. A cool thing about the Wiki is all of us helping each other for the benefit of everyone. Because you put it there I created the Gen6 and Gen7 pages and categories which we can really use anyway.

The biggest change I'd like to see is for folks to start putting the Product or Generation in their topic titles. Categories help but doesn't a topic title like:
----- "Archos 5A: XXX Software" make more sense than "XXX Software" -----
as we move forward. The 5A may be the only one that has XXX software now, yet down the road  other Archos devices will have XXX software, too.

Just sayin' :D

But the full topic title would be "Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android: Topic title" otherwise people will have 12 different ways of abbreviating the product name..

I added formatting to the archos 5, and 5a pages, makes them look much cleaner. Better to have all the info on one page rather than just a load of links.

I'd still like the uploading feature unlocked please.

It would be nice to put in images for tutorials, so I would too, Charbax! :)

So, any abbreviation is better than not putting the Product or Generation in the topic. You as the Administrator, and the folks you give the privileges to, can move the current ambiguously named pages to more appropriately titled Topics.

Create a topic for Standard Abbreviations for Archos devices in Topic Titles:
I suggest some of the following:
5A = The Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android
5IMT = The Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet
7IMT = The Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet
... and so on ...
Gen7 = Archos Generation 7 devices
... and so on ...

If we don't do this, in three years we could have Topics with very ambiguous titles like:
--- Bugs with Firmware 1.2.03
Where the Archos 5IT, the Archos 6IT and the Archos 7IT all have FW releases of 1.2.03

What are the standard abbreviations which Archos uses? I'm sure they have them internally. Perhaps you could find out and we could use theirs in our Standards pages.

I've been around a loonnnggggg time and if you don't implement standards as soon as feasible, it doesn't take long before you can get into a real mess!

I suggest you start interviewing additional members of the Forum to help you administrate the Wiki. There's only so much of you to go around and I want to see more of your videos without having them come at the expense of not having the Wiki administered! :)

Thanks Allen...that gave me the perfect place to add the Beginners Guide w/o needing to modify it for Archos relevance!

Charbax,

Just a quick suggestion. Would it be possible to condense some of the pinned topics into one?
A lot of the stuff seems like it's more appropriate for the wiki and you could just link to that.
With your announcements and sticky topics, it's difficult to continually have to scan past
them to find the latest regular topic.

I think you could get away with one or two Announcements and do away with most of the sticky posts.
1) Wiki - How-tos, FAQs, Specs, Applications, ADB
2) FORUM RULEZ

These sticky posts could really just be in the wiki (or already are):
- List of .apk files
- List of BT phones
- wallpapers
- ADB how-to

The amazon links are really annoying, most people can search and find out where they want to buy themselves, don't ya think?

So, with those small changes, I think you could make the forum much easier to follow and that pretty much gets it down to a few announcements and sticky topics for latests firmware thread and feature requests.

I'm looking for an easy to implement forum plugin that would allow to hide Announcements and Stickies behind a little + icon and have it be saved as forum user preferences.. Sure everything can be in the wiki, the fact though is for now not so many people are using the wiki. I'll link better to the wiki and we'll see how much better the Wiki is going to be in the next few weeks and perhaps there are other forum plugins to link relevant posts to the wiki automatically in one click, and thus minimize the amount of times people ask the same questions and make it easier for people to find the relevant solutions in the wiki.
