Hi.

Is there anyone using a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) at the USB port of the Archos Gen 9?

The USB Digital Audio is still not officially implemented by Google on Android devices, but I have heard that Archos has implemented it on the G9 devices. Can anyone confirm that?

If this is true, I will buy the 250GB Archos 80 G9 right now. That would make a great Sound Station for playing my CD collection that is ripped onto FLAC files.

Thank You

@liveinthemoment

You should be careful not to generalise!

1> See my post viewtopic.php?f=84&t=64350

2> The DR nano does NOT have an external power capability and runs just fine of the OTG connector

I could be wrong but from my testing I got a feel from the sounds produced that they were post dsp processing as they were horrible!!

Sounded fine on my cans!

4> I am not having much luck finding an Audio app that reliably supports the DR Nano DAC, however I have been trying a SUPERB sound app, "Neutron MP" This may not have a UI to everyones taste. BUT IT SUPPPORTS 24/96 bit decoding using its own decode engine. It sound great on some of my highdef flac files played through good quality headphones. NOT through my DAC, but using Neutron app only.

Here is some detail about Neutron:-

Quote:

Thanks for the info on Neutron.

I don't think it does playback at 24bit, only that it's capable to play 24bit encoded files and resamples them to 16bit (see the notes in the bit you posted about resampling). As far as I'm aware full 24bit playback is not possible on any Android device.

Anyways, will be glad when my G9 arrives and I can try my FiiO E17 via a micro USB OTG cable. Will report all results, although it looks like it's been confirmed working by others anyways.

Thank you very much for all you valuable comments.

It seems that it is not prudent to buy a G9 at this time, if it is going to be used mainly as a Digital Source for Music Playing. I will wait to read the results from more test, and for more information from the Archos developers.

Firstly, I was going to buy the Logitech Squeezebox Touch (it has SPDIF output), but it is reported to have a lot of problems when used as a standalone player (reading the files from an external USB hard disk)

It woud be important to confirm that, because if the signal is passing through a DSP, or if it is subject to digital artifacts or manipulation, then it can not be seriously considered as a High-Quality Digital Music Player.

Here are the official news about the Firmware Changes:
http://update.archos.com/9/gen9/changes_firmware_archos_android_gen9it4.htm

I have highlighted the changes regarding issues with Digital Audio:

Version 4.0.5 - March 22nd, 2012
ÔÇó HDMI: solve no sound or no video output issue on some TVs

Version 3.2.78 - December 19th, 2011
ÔÇó Audio accessory: fix USB DAC not supporting 44.1kHz

Version 3.2.77 - December 6th, 2011
ÔÇó Accessories: external USB audio cards (DAC) support has been added
ÔÇó Audio: suppress sound glitches with flac files on loudspeakers

So, they do officially "support" USB DAC, but they do not provide further details.

I was also considering another option: since my DAC (Mhdt Labs Havana) has both USB and S/PDIF inputs, I could use a HDMI to SPDIF converter (they sell on Ebay for around $40). But first I need to answer at least this 2 questions:

1- I have read at the manual of some tablets that the screen of the tablet gets blank when the HDMI output is used. I donÔÇÖt know if this is the case of the Archos G9, but if it's like this, then the HDMI output can not be used for Audio only (without a TV attached to the HDMI).

2- I donÔÇÖt know if the Android software music players would allow to send the audio signal to the HDMI Output.

Hi,

FYI, I've got a 101 G9, 1.5Ghz, 250gb version. After some research I've decided to try a BEHRINGER UCA222 usb DAC interface.cheap enough to give it a try. :) ..it seems to work with power amp and the official music application...didn't work with youtube and tune in radio...but with the 250Gb version introduces A LOT OF noise  (from the HDD i think)

Regards

PS just tried some music videos...strangely there is no hiss, buzz or other strange sounds when you play video..tried the built in player, vplayer...when you put back mp3s ou flac...the hissing and glitching sounds start all over

Interesting, USB audio on 4.0.5 completely broken for me with the E17. I downgraded to 4.0.4 and USB audio is working well, seems Archos broke this in the 4.0.5 update...

To those who tried DACs that didn't work, which firmware were you on?

With my 101 G9 250GB (v4.0.5) I can get audio out on the 3G port to work.
I have this USB to Audio adapter (3.5mm jack IN and OUT) from my Logitech G330 headset:
click

I don't now if this is a true DAC as the other adapters here, but it works.
Though this adapter gives a little more bass, general audio output is noticeably lower than the onboard 3.5mm jack.
I did not test the microphone function with this adapter at all.

USB volume output is lower for me also via the micro USB slot, fortunately the E17 has a grunty headphone amp as well as the DAC.
