Archos publishes an update on the faster OMAP4 processor speed availability in the G9 tablets:

Archos G9 Turbo 1.2Ghz models start to be released by the end of October.

Archos G9 Turbo (Plus?) 1.5Ghz models start to be released by December.

Archos G9 1Ghz are being released right now.

It seems that there is still no confirmation if the Turbo tablets come with 1GB RAM or not. Price difference for Turbo seems to be to pay $30 more, which doubles ROM to 16GB and might also double RAM to 1GB.

And the 1.2Ghz is a hardware change not a software.

I like how you blot out Chris's last name in his responses, but don't blot out his name in Archos' response.

I love how Archos gets asked about RAM amounts in their turbos but never answer the question. They answer everything else it seems that people ask, but their most asked question just gets ignored. Just like they were doing before the 1GHz 80 came out. This leads me to believe that they have 512MB of RAM as well. They should just come out and say it now. I think people would be less likely to get upset if they know a head of time than wait until the day you release them to let people know.

Mark it down right here and humiliate me with glee if wrong. The 1.5ghz chip will NOT ship beyond small test samples in December. Probably aint' happening.

I think it's possible that the guys answering on Facebook just don't know that answer. Because the RAM may be in testing until the last second of mass production in the factory for both 1.2Ghz and 1.5Ghz Turbo.

RAM optimizations for OMAP4 and Honeycomb 3.2 are right now coming into place. For example, the firmware update coming on monday has this entry:

"Memory: smaller memory footprint"

yeah i failed at least i tried :(

And there is a mistake also they are speaking about 1.2 Ghz to 1.5Ghz no about 1.0 to 1.2Ghz so i made a second mistake too :P

No offense but I DO know the global consumer electronics business and have been in it from a material management, purchasing and planning standpoint since 1998- plus my undergrad is in computer electronics. Trying not to disrespect the keeper of this forum, but based on some of your assertions on hardware and sometimes missed statements, I could propose the same to you ;)

Looking forward to December ;) :)

That's a little harsh [-X
"You are wrong about that" would be a little nicer (less rude)
He is most likely basing his comment on how the Gen8s were released, nothing wrong with basing thoughts on past experience. Try to be nice.

I'm just saying without being rude, he can't know anything. Probably even the Texas Instruments engineers don't know for sure yet.

I've seen the first OMAP4460 test samples last June at Computex in Taiwan, so you're statement is already probably wrong. I also saw the first Tegra3 test samples since February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and again their first demo of Tegra3 in demo tablet last June at Computex in Taiwan, again, test samples mean nothing, they can easily make test samples, what matters is exactly when they are ready to mass produce at a low cost. It's all about a yield and timing. And has nothing to do with yearly rythms, this years OMAP4 has nothing to do with last year's OMAP3 mass production, last year OMAP3 in Gen8 was on its third generation (Archos had been using OMAP3 since Gen6!), now the OMAP4 is ramping up at a whole new level of performance. And I've seen the first OMAP4 samples in February 2010 (if you search Google for OMAP4 you will see my video as the first search result), that's over 18 months ago, so again, your test sample quantity for December theory is totally to be seen and confirmed.

There are rumors that not just Archos but all the major smartphone and tablet makers are patiently awaiting mass production of OMAP4460 1.5Ghz to use as the official processor to support Ice Cream Sandwich phones, tablets, laptops and set-top-boxes, and that those devices are all to be released in mass quantities before Christmas, that Samsung wants it for the Nexus Prime, that LG has a big new dual-core device waiting, that OMAP4430 is already confirmed in Atrix2 but that Motorola obviously prefers to use OMAP4460 in it, that Toshiba wants it in their tablet etc etc.

Texas Instruments made sure to build the System On Chip for OMAP4 in a way that those devices and motherboards need very little tweaking, nearly no change for upgrading the designs from OMAP4430 1.2Ghz to OMAP4460 1.5Ghz to OMAP4470 1.8Ghz, meaning Archos could easily use all of them in the G9 series as soon as TI is ready to ship each of them.

But you did say it in a rude way. Anyway, if Texas Instruments engineers might not know, that means neither do you, which means rushmore still could be right.

Am I the only one that sees the glimer of humor in that post? :?

If the Archos G9 1.5GHz reaches stores in full force by christmas we can open a new thread for doing the humiliation and gleeing. ;)

That is the point :) I have been giving Charby a hard time since the infamous capped volume on Archos media players since 2006 :) His heart is good and he communicates in English better than I do :(

In regards to samples, I am not referring to engineering samples, but actual production run samples to verify wafer yields and actual cost per chip/batch. Those are pushed before mass production.

Marcus, I think I am right due in part to the line growing for the 1.5ghz chip for devices "expected" at the end of the year. Archos will be fighting with some bigger OEM players for chip runs. Not long to find out. This assumes TI gets their act together in one of the biggest holiday seasons of the year- Good luck getting product out in mass from Asia in December- been there done that :( There is a reason companies ramp up supply in November ;)

side note:

Still surprised there is no full USB port for thumbdrive and HD use. Not all folks want hard drive versions but would like the space option. I have seen no confirmation that the usb connector has the needed power bridge to support full USB host.

The Archos G9 comes with 2 usb host ports, one at the 3G stick compartment supposed to only work for the Archos 3G Stick (reason being only the Archos 3G stick is thin and compact enough to fit, and that they cannot guarantee the support of other 3G usb sticks that require other drivers to work), and you can use the main Micro-USB connector as a USB host using the Micro-USB to Normal-USB adapter.

Charbax, I have much respect for you, but have you watch the video I posted above? :) They show 1TB HDD powering and working from the port which is supposed to work only for Archos 3G stick.
