EDIT: 01 September 2012: NO NEED for my custom builds now as current Rockbox release candidates and daily builds have the Meier crossfeed patch built-in. Rasher's daily builds are great, that's what I'm running now.

To have the Rockbox database scan properly add an empty file database.ignore to /mnt/storage (your default directory in the Android file manager) and then add an empty file database.unignore to the top level of any directory you want recursively scanned.

http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/

END EDIT

I build Rockbox for my different players with the Meier crossfeed patch. Here is an android package for screen size 480x800, it works really nicely on my A43IT running a recent firmware (2.4.82).

http://www.mediafire.com/?e14bl762r789mnc

This is built from 3.10 final and the only modification is the Meier patch, which you can see at http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/11767

Some info about the Meier crossfeed: http://www.meier-audio.homepage.t-online.de/crossfeed.htm

About the Rockbox Android port: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort You can find on that page links to Rasher's daily builds from unmodified source. My experience has been that some work well and some don't, which is to be expected on an unstable port. The source from the last stable release, 3.10, produces a really nice stable, fully functional build.

I obtain source using git and I build on a Debian Stable x86 PC. My package is signed only with the debug key so you can't upgrade to or from someone else's Rockbox build; you need to uninstall RB and then install the RB you want. The signing offers no guarantee of the package's integrity, or of mine. I offer the package as a convenience as it costs me nothing to do so except a few minutes of my time.

I expect that this build will work on any Android device with a screen resolution 480x800 or larger but I only have the A43IT and that is the only device on which I know it works.

If someone wants the same package for a bigger screen size then let me know by replying in this thread and I can do it. I don't know the screen sizes of the other gen8 devices but the sizes I can build are (I think):

240x320
320x480
480x800
540x960
600x1024
720x1280
800x480
1024x600
1280x800

Other sizes would have problems with font and icon sizes. I will only build version 3.10 and don't intend to build a newer version until the next stable Rockbox release. In the meantime Technical Support is available toll free at 0800-UR-MOM.

I have the Archos 70b would it be possible for you to do a 1024X600. I've had 400x800 working but would like to fill the screen and have it in landscape!

Here it is: ftp://takla.homelinux.org/rockbox_meier_android/rockbox-3.10_meier_1024x600.apk

I stuck with 3.10 in preference to the 3.11 series because I repeatedly had crashes with 3.11 in Android.

I put my other rockbox android packages in the ftp site as well because the free file hosts are a pain to use so if anyone wants one of the packages I posted before the just go to ftp://takla.homelinux.org

Thanks for the file. Sorry to be a pain but I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong? When I install this I can run it no problem. I have updated the Database, but when I try to select one of the options (i.e. Artist) it appears to lock up. All my Music is on a Micro SD card but these have worked without issue previously.

A further question Does this include a theme or will I need to find or alter one to use? I have manged to run music via the file view and the theme's do not seem to appear?

Rockbox for Android only has the theme included in the standard build, so what you see is what you get.

I use Rockbox without database on all my players (various iRiver and Sansa models as well as the A43IT) but I have tried Rockbox's database on my Archos ages ago and recall it locked up (I don't use it on my older very low powered players because the extra load on the CPU or memory caused problems with crackles). It's not a bug I can help with as I'm not a Rockbox developer, just someone who makes my own packages from source which is unmodified except for the Meier patch, which has absolutely no effect on database building or reading. I had a brief look at recent posts on the Rockbox Android thread http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,14177.0.html and didn't notice people having the same issue on other devices. I suspect the issue is to do with the unusual way the Archos devices use two SD cards, one internal and one external, and the fact that this results in some of Rockbox's directories being read-only whereas they would normally be writeable, though I may be way off the mark here. If you want to report a bug at rockbox.org it you'll need to install an unmodified build such as one of rasher's from http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/. Meanwhile I would uninstall and reinstall (or maybe kill Rockbox then delete all rockbox database files and main config) and try it using folder navigation instead.

Meanwhile if you want to try 3.11.2-final for 1024x600 and see if that's any different I just put an apk in the ftp server.

Thanks very much Julian. I'll keep trying!

Like you I use Rockbox on a Sansa Clip Zip. I'm fairly new to it however, the Zip only got Rockbox late on last year! I saw this thread and figured why not try to get RB on my tablet too!! I'll try 3.11, I'm fairly sure my Clip has 3.10. The folder navigation, where does the micro SD card show up? I have only accessed music on the internal drive which came with the tablet!

External SD shows to the user browsing in Rockbox as sdcard/sdcard or storage/sdcard.

btw on the Clip avoid 3.11 and go straight to the newest stable release, 3.11.2, because 3.11 had a major power consumption problem on Sansa models.

Thanks very much, not sure if it was clearing out the old stuff or adding the new, but I now have 3.11.2 working with the Database. I have a theme Brushedrobe, which is 640X480. I now need to start working on my own theme which is 1024x600. Again, thank you very much for your help!

Works great on htc sensation on Ice Cream Sandwich, except for the resolution...

Thanx again

ftp://takla.homelinux.org/rockbox-3.10_meier_540x960.apk

By the way the Meier patch is now included by default in Rockbox, so you can get a build from Rasher's daily builds http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/ and it should be fine. The only advantage my build might have is that it's from a stable version that works well. The daily builds have an improved theme as well as being more feature complete, but they can be flaky.

btw I changed my server a little while ago and didn't get around to setting up an ftp server again until just now, so none of the previously linked files are up there except the one I just did for AlexOliv. If anyone wants a Meier patched build of Rockbox 3.10 just ask. I found all later versions a bit unstable on my A43IT (almost always crashes on loading extended m3u) so I'm sticking with 3.10 for the moment.

Sorry about that, the firewall is open for ftp now and the file is accessible.
