None of the gen8 tablets will ever be updated by Archos beyond the last firmware 2.4.83 which was issued in March 2012 and is based on Android Froyo (2.2).
You can run an unofficial Cyanogenmod ROM (codename degu) based on Gingerbread but it lacks hardware acceleration for video playback and has a few other issues like non-working camera. It's not that useful unless you never watch videos and don't care about battery life.
If you just want a bit more flexibility you can get root more easily these days. Follow the directions in http://dev.openaos.org/wiki/SettingUpMultiRootGen8
and you'll be able to run the regular Archos firmware but rooted so you can block ads and so on.
