Archos 101IT Dual OSon www.archos.com was that always there?
Just found this on Archos.com....??? was it always there or what??
Just like a PC, the ARCHOS 101 internet tablet can be freely programmed in alternative ways. This gives developers programming options in addition to the applications that can be created for the Android platform. To have total control of your Internet Tablet, ARCHOS has opened up this device, thus allowing creative minds to program their own tablet, or create what could be the tablet of the future.
ARCHOS has decided to « open » its ARCHOS 101 internet tablet by proposing to install and replace the system running Android originally installed on the machine.
Developers and programmers can choose for the operating system running under Linux distribution ├àngstr├Âm.
Developers can install this OS on an ARCHOS 101 internet tablet and join the Linux community which is developing a new interface, new icons, drivers, programs ... dedicated to this platform.
Skilled developers and programmers can now choose to switch over to a true standard Linux environment as offered by the ├àngstr├Âm Linux distribution. Developers can put this on their ARCHOS 101 internet tablet devices and join other enthusiasts who are experimenting with various ideas and interfaces based on the Linux operating system.

http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html (scroll to bottom)

When last asked a couple of months ago, the Gen 8 SDE was said to be out "soon after release", which I think should be taken as after 2.2 release, not the Gen 8 itself.
Check into Gen7 - Open Dev forum. The only Open Dev dude still regularly posting there is dm8tbr. I think they are doing 2.2 update for the Gen6/7 toys.

Android is pretty much just an interface layer on linux. what good would it be to go backwards and start over considering the entire world is involved in advancing android these days. it wont be long you will start seeing car stereos and kitchen appliances with android installed.

Wether or not you want to use this feature does not really matter.
I think it is awesome that Archos has allowed for this. It also means that root access should be cake. And if an OS does come around that beats android then we can install it with little difficulty.
to Archos for this move. It is very nerd pleasing
I might like to have Full Linux just for fun or as a dual boot. You are then talking about a fully functional desktop PC. Drivers for most anything, support for virtual machines, lots of cool things.
I think Android is perfect for todays devices, but as the devices get more powerful and battery technology improves we will most likely be looking toward the more powerful OS's like Linux and Windows and full OSX.

How does that work? Is it a regular install of Linux that will allow us to run other Linux apps?
Personally the ability to dual boot would be great. I see on the ├àngstr├Âm website that they installed abiword. That would be golden.
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/
It is actually designed to run on tablets and other embedded systems. I think in a lot of ways (apps) this blows Android out of the water. I mean spreadsheets, powerpoint, etc on that big screen! Openoffice!?

This is exactly the reason I have an A9 Win7 tablet. I've installed Linux from 1995 to 2007, and I'm tired of configuring an OS with so many limitations "out of the box".Ameriswede wrote: It is actually designed to run on tablets and other embedded systems. It's nice to have options. I would like dual boot: Android and Win7.

Re: Archos 101IT Dual OSon www.archos.com was that always th
So can we install this ourselves on a normal 'single boot' 101?
Re: Archos 101IT Dual OSon www.archos.com was that always th
This was always available for the Archos 5IT, but there were things you'd lose as a result of doing it. From memory, it was primarily DRM, which would have been an issue for me. Since they didn't bother building the DRM support into the 101, that's not going to be an issue at least!
