I have a 70IT running Firmware 2.4.83 with Android 2.2.1.

Is it possible to update to Android versions as they come out? I've upated my Galaxy S from Gingerbread to ICS and was wondering if I could do the same to my Archos.
Does anybody have any experience with this?
    Will it improve performance?

its not possible because Archos doesnt want to support Gen8 devices anymore. 2.4.83 is the latest firmware. There is neither Gingerbread (android 2.3) nor ICS (android 4.0). There are couple of custom roms which will bring you more performance instead of stock firmware. If you seek the performance I suggest you these roms - UrukDroid (froyo) or OpenAOS's Bull (gingerbread).

Sorry but I don't understand. First you write that it's not possible but you recommend a Gingerbread ROM. So I can flash a Gingerbread ROM which will at least bump my Android version up a little?

Thanks.

I can't imagine where this information came from. The Archos 70IT barely meets the minimum hardware requirements for Gingerbread. If you installed it, I don't think you would have a happy experience using your machine.

There is a working CM7 build working on gen8 devices(i use it happily on my A70S - made the archos seem like a whole new device), check out this thread on XDA :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335620

I wanted to say that the Gingerbread ROM is not made by Archos, its made by OpenAOS team as custom rom for gen8 devices.
