Playing DVDs

Post by TonyAbbott »

Hi all,

Like many I got a tablet for Xmas and thought it woudl be great if I could copy some of my DVDs to the device so that I could watch on the train.

I copied the files from the DVD to my PC, and then to the tablet but they won't play.

I've been looking through some of the threads and their is a suggestion that you cannot copy DVDs because they are copy protected, but I can play the copied files on my PC, so it's not that.

Another thought was that they were in the wrong format?
Anyone have any thoughts on this, and if that's the case does anyone know how they could be converted to play on the tablet?

Any suggestions greatfully received.
Thanks
Tony.

It's true that most dvd's have copy protection on, and simply copying them from the disc to your pc usually leaves you with a pixelated, unwatcheable mess - some cheaper ones don't have it. There are plenty of apps to 'rip' dvd's to your pc and remove the copy protection ( dvd decrypter, dvd fab, anydvd etc....) more importantly though is the Archos ability to play the ripped .VOB files - you must install the mpeg/AC3 plugin from the Archos site, it's not free but it's worth getting if you intend to use the device as a serious video player

Firstly, the plugin is not actually required to play films, it is required if you want to play unconverted dvd files (.VOB) on your device and to play the audio tracks in AC3 format, although this in reality includes most high definition video files these days, such as .mkv ( bluray rips etc )
The plugin can be purchased from Archos.com for £8.oo, you must register your device in order to buy and install it.

I am awaiting delivery of a 250gb 70. I purchased the plugin several years ago for my 605, can I use it again?

Nope, it's specific to each device.
