Hey Guys.
I got my Archos 70 for X-Mas and since a few days i really start to like it.
I installed the Android Market and G-Apps, i removed the live wallpaper and now i added Swiftkey because the Stock-Keyboard is just aweful.
But after those "fixing" its starting to become the tablet i always wanted.
Except for GPS-Tethering not working with my HTC Desire.

What i dont understand is:
Why is my Archos 70 SO SLOW and LAGGY?
My HTC Desire has almost the same Hardware, same Screenresolution but it is WAY WAY WAY smoother.
Thats how i want my Archos 70 too

So why is my Archos 70 so slow and laggy although it has also a 1Ghz Processor like my HTC Desire?
Both run Froyo, both capacitive, both 1Ghz, both 800x480

The problem is the RAM ....
HTC has 512 MB or so of ram while the Archos has 256 MB only !!!!

Just a question, but what version of firmware are you running? Because if you got it for Christmas and didn't update the firmware, it is not running Froyo yet. You should be running 2.0.71 firmware. If not I would suggest wiping the device and starting over with this FW. The unit is much snapper with this than the 1.x firmware.

Operating system resource management. Killing background apps help. After a while I have to just reboot mine to get back the crisp fastness.

It helps if you DONT run a live desktop background. Also use launcherpro or ADWhome instead of the default. Dont bury the desktop in widgets. It doesn't handle stuff running in the background as well as it should. Our device would work better IMO if multi-tasking were just plain disabled and everything closed when closed.

I'd call that an iphone.

Launcher pro seems to have addressed the lag issue of the A70 for me. You might give that or another luncher a try and see if that helps.

I too wonder which firmware you are running. If it was delivered with 2.1 --> that did not support Bluetooth GPS. That came in with the 2.2 firmware.

For fun -- I tried GPS tethering with my daughter's HTC Desire and it worked OK.

Im running 2.0.71 and i use a taskkiller too.
I have updated it right after unboxing it.
I also dont use Launcher Pro, even with no widgets in my Screen its not that smooth
Also there is no Live Wallpaper :(
The only widget i use is SwitchPro

So u think Launcher Pro could help me?
And goodsonr: Which app do u use to tether GPS? I cant even Tether Internet by Bluetooth :(

EDIT: DAMN Launcher Pro Plus 0.8.2 seems to be WAY faster !! WAAAAAAAY FASTER ! Thanks !
It feels like a WHOLE new device !

Launcher Pro Plus made my Archos 70 THAT device i can now LOVE :)

Take it from someone who switched from Launcherpro to ADW, if you like to carefully layout your homescreen, go ahead and switch. Launcherpro has widget resizing disabled until you pay and will annoy you to pay up all the time when you accidentally try to drag a widget and make it think you want to resize it instead. ADW on the other hand is fully free. I will say its app drawer doesn't seem as snappy though, BUT it let me get rid of the task bar (both do) and let me make it so a swipe down brings down notifications and a swipe up brings up app drawer (I also got rid of the dock buttons). Both fairly similar though.

Besides all the tips given, the question still stands. The archos products still won't be as smooth, snappy or speedy as my Desire.
Can't just be the RAM, even with 100 mb free it can't compete...

Hi there!
I'm Ricardo, from Portugal, and just got my Archos 70 today!
Still drulling and only installed froyo and the Gmarket... I don't have an SD card yet and I want to install launcherPro!
If it gets really faster like alessandro said that would really be a plus! :D

Where do I buy it ?
Do you guys recommend any other apps?

Thank you very much for all the help!

Eunito.

If i may tell you Ricardo:

0: Disable Portrait Mode fully, just Landscape (My Archos often stuck while switching from Portrait to Landscape)
1: Get SwitchPro Widget instead of the Archos Widgets for Wifi, Bluetooth and so on
2: Get Launcher Pro Plus its like 10 times faster !
3: Get Smart Keyboard Pro (i chose the HTC Skin - I love this Skin)

And my last Tip: Put your Archos to "Overdrive" Mode - Its better to have 7 hours of Battery and Power instead of 8 laggy hours i think. The Battery is great anyway !

That way you get a GREAT Tablet instead of a stucking Archos stock tablet :)
Since those 4 Steps i LOVE my Archos :) Its fast, smooth, good keyboard and so on.

Try the Market fix.
Quote:
MARKET FIX:
This will get you most missing apps from the market, except some "protect market apps" like NYTimes.

1. Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Market (Clear Cache then 'Force Stop' -- DO NOT clear data)
2. Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Google Services Framework (Clear data then 'Force Stop')
3. REBOOT again

Also, I've tried Launcher pro, ADW.launcher, and Zeam. Zeam seems quicker IMO, but Launcher pro was still really nice and much better than the stock launcher

Finaly got my A70 (from Expansys). No matter what optimization you try it can't compare to the Desire. Browser, mail, picture gallery, actually everything is slower. I don't think it's only the hw, software still feels a little "beta". Hopefully Archos will continue to improve it's version of android.

Hey Alessandro ... about the GPS thing...

I can't recall what freebie application was used on the HTC Desire. But it was just something to force the GPS to be on. You could probably accomplish the same thing by just bringing up Google Maps on the Desire.

At that point .. just need to pair the HTC and the Archos (don't worry if it says paired but not connected).

Then in the Setting->Location (not exact name .. I'm not in front of the tablet) you should find the HTC Desire GPS listed as a device. Select it and you are off to the races.

There are a bunch of threads on using BlueTooth GPS with the Archos.

As an aside .. I couldn't get the Bluetooth internet tethering to work either with the HTC. But the HTC Wifi Hotspot worked fine, so I didn't really care that much. I was just fooling around anyway.

Hi all,

Thanks for all good advice in this forum.
I was really depressd with my Archos 70, I bought it in late November and when compared with my HTC Desire it make feel really mad... and sad.
It cross my mind sending it back to be checked... was only waiting the end of this festive times.
Yesterday I read this tread and now I am much much pleased with this little toy. Still not 100% happy, but closer to it.
Archos needs to sort out a few things, like Adobe Flash, problems with files beeing deleted from sd card, some crashs... but now I am not sending it back (yet) thanks to some of you.

Happy New Year and my best regards,

Rui
