This Sticky topic is a place holder for tips to new owners. I'll update this OP as we go along. I created this topic following a suggestion from a member - vohkuhl.

This topic has immediate consequences in duplication: All the Gen8s run the same Firmware. So each Gen8 forum Might be able to use the same "Newbie Tips".

On 24 Nov I've copied this Sticky topic to the Gen8 General, A101 and A70 forums. Let's see how they end up. Also, I see this topic discussion as a feeder to a "Newbie Tips" page in our Wiki.

In the past when I get a new toy I:
1. Video the unboxing
2. Skim the Owner's Manual (OM)
3. Read the Startup Section (SS) of the OM very closely
4. Attach power
4. Follow the instructions in the SS exactly
5. Install all Supplied Apps
6. Completely backup everything I can to my PC Hard Drive

I should get my A70 Monday afterward I will post here again with what I actually do.

As a newbie. My tip is if things are not working, try rebooting.

I spent over 15 minutes trying different methods to get the gallery widget to see the images (that it could see the day before). In the end I rebooted in desperation and the images were there again.

Since I'll be receiving my A70 tomorrow, any suggestions on "must" have applications I should download?
This will be my first droid experience, looking forward to tinkering and nerding out!

Thanks Allen for this and thanks vohkuhl for suggesting.

I've moved across to this forum now from the Archos 7HT forum. I've just sold my HT and ordered an Archos 70 8Gb from Dixons UK, which should arrive in a couple of days or so.

I really look forward to all the great advice and support I received from the users, (a lot of them are here too), that helped me in the early days of my 7HT.

No need now - they have put it on ftp://support.archos.com (now put in faqs among other things)

According to a message in this 101 thread from the 101 message area : viewtopic.php?f=74&t=42037 if we update to 2.2 os we then cannot go back to 2.1 os?
I just wanted to verify this is the same for my A70IT as this will stop me for sure at this point from installing 2.2 until I read all the kinks are ironed out.

Thanks for your answer on this.

Any fix for this "Cannot Play Video! Media Server Error" Message? I was watching videos earlier now none of them will play.

EDIT: A reboot did not fix the error, but a shutdown/power on cycle did. Still, is there a cause for this?

Do not install "voice search" even though it is one of the most popular google market apps and even though it seems to work fine. While you aren't looking it will bring your archos to it's knees and put you thru hours of hell. Also beware of setting up the stock gallery app to see photos off the internet.

For anyone else, I had posted that crazy voiceSearch pitfall and another one related to gallery in a new gen8 app forum here (thread: "apps to be WARY of"). Should they be posted as firmware bugs? Maybe the fault is mostly outside the firmware, but it could include some kind of prevention?

This is a fairly obscure tip for mac owners who want to see the hidden files on archos like .nomedia (which you might add to or remove from a directory to prevent media scanning). On your mac (which is usb plugged to archos):

open terminal.app and paste in:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
alt hold while mousepress of finder to bring up relaunch option

viola - you can see the hidden archos files (your mac adds some on there also). You can reverse it all with a NO to undo

I'd recommend creating a number of folders on your micro-SD card with the .nomedia file such as photos, videos, music etc and downloading JustPictures! from the market. Open the photos etc from Files app, SD card folder. Also recommend putting the device into Overdrive mode. Its better.

Suggestion is to create (on SD card) a folder named Pictures, Music, Videos, each containing a blank file named ".nomedia" and pointing JustPictures! app to it?

When you download JustPictures! go to Files/SD Card/Photos, and click your photo and pick JustPictures! as the default viewer. Way faster and better than Gallery. The .nomedia in the folders stops the Archos from deleting your media on the SD card.

How do I uninstall Voice Search? I can't do it from settings or uninstall app.

Hey all - hope you had a good christmas
I don't even qualify as newbie yet - so may be dumb questions (archos 70IT 8GBflash on order and here anyday)

Any tips as to the best upgrades and or order of install for best experience out of the box.

ie) froyo 2.2, firware 2.0.71, pro-launcher, kenyu73 gAppsInstaller - version 4 or 5?

just want to be sure not to jump to fast/high and brick it day 1 LOL

Also any "must have" apps reccomendations would be great - planning some surfing, excel editing, h264 video watching (sounds like AAC might be an issue) and picture viewing.

thanks in advance - just a bit confusing reading through update threads from a newb perspective - appoligies if this is redundant or rehashed! :D
