I'm in Canada rather than the US. I wanted to post here, though, as a (yet another) warning to not use Simply Electronics as a retailer.
I've been waiting patiently to be able to buy the 43IT. Finally it became available on the Achos site last week. I tried to buy one, but for whatever reason that site couldn't ship to Canada. My patience wore out, and I bit the bullet. I ordered from Simply Electronics. I paid $285 USD, which may seem steep, but there was no tax (at least somehow I paid no tax) and shipping was free...so the price wasn't bad at all (considering the tax rate we Canadians have to pay!)...and it was available.
Anyway, my 43IT arrived yesterday...really nice device. Unfortunately for me, the device sent to me was USED. It had already been reset and so the default third party apps that Archos installs are gone (I guess I can get them from the Market..). The device had also already been registered with Archos!
I've emailed Simply Electronics about this, but they are in "deny deny deny" mode. In fact in t he responses I've received SE claims that all the products they ship are new...they also claim that sometimes the shrink wrapping is removed as their techs need to make sure the box isn't empty....yeah...OK...
I'm going to try and prove that SE sent me a used device by seeing if Archos can verify when and or from where my particular device was registered with them. If they can, I can then prove SE practices its business fraudulently. Small comfort, I know.
Anyway, this is just another voice saying "Stay away from Simply Electronics".
Let me say again, by the way, that the 43 is really nice (gets a little warm, though).
Word on the forums has been that SE orders them out of Hong Kong.. which they would need to make sure that they get genuine products-- although I would think that by now they'd be dealing with a reputable source by now... But.. If you didn't already have one.. I'd say to go with other etailers who NOW HAVE THEM IN STOCK who are selling them at or slightly below msrp.. as they should be doing. Many come with free shipping or other incentives.
BTW, I finally got my 43 this week... and although I am a bit disappointed with the number of apps that dont' run well on it... overall.. it is a great media player and approved apps work well enough. I'm still having some trouble finding a voip solution that doesn't have issues such as half duplex voip calls, ugh!!!
Also, what were you expecting your 43 to be a Canadian (French) edition?
Also, the firmware I got was 22.214.171.124 on the device.. I upgraded to 126.96.36.199 from Archos.. the apps ask to be installed after that update too.. so you should try updating/replacing the firmware & see if that works...
