Thank you very much for testing it! XviD/DivX AVIs with QPel were my main concern, but I know other people here want to see how it handles much harder files so I found some trailers and made some clips:

Here are two HD clips from US TV shows made with AviDemux, the AC3 audio they use might be an issue

MKV h.264 1280x720 24fps High Profile Level 3.1 CABAC 3 Reference Frames (6 channel AC3 audio, might not play)

MKV h.264 1280x720 30fps High Profile Level 4.1 CABAC 4 Reference Frames (2 channel AC3 audio, might not play)

Here are some anime since anime encoders really stress playback capabilities, though at least they use AAC audio

MKV h.264 704x396 30fps High Profile Level 3.1 CABAC 9 Reference Frames ASS subtitles (Mirror) (Mirror) (Mirror) (Mirror) (note the 9 reference frames)

MKV h.264 1280x720 24fps High Profile Level 4.0 CABAC 3 Reference Frames ASS subtitles (Mirror)

MKV h.264 1280x720 30fps High Profile Level 3.1 CABAC 5 Reference Frames ASS subtitles (Mirror)

MKV h.264 1280x720 24fps High Profile Level 3.1 CABAC 5 Reference Frames ASS subtitles (1080p version lol)

Here are clips from full anime shows made with AviDemux, so subtitles are gone and if they don't play right it might be due to AviDemux

MKV h.264 848x480 24fps High Profile Level 4.1 CABAC 9 Reference Frames

MKV h.264 1280x720 24fps High Profile Level 4.0 CABAC 8 Reference Frames (has playback problems on PC) (alternate clip from same encoder with same specs and same playback problems)

Here are some clips of MP4 files ripped from Facebook and Myspace which don't play on the Archos 605 with plugin

MKV h.264 720x480 24fps High Profile Level 3.0 CABAC 3 Reference Frames (Facebook clip)

MKV h.264 720x480 24fps High Profile Level 3.0 CABAC 3 Reference Frames (Myspace clip, same settings, just higher bitrate)

Here are some challenging edge cases which might not work

AVI XviD 848x480 24fps ASP@L5 BVOP (XviD/DivX at 848x480, older Archos can't handle it)

MKV XviD 426x320 24fps ASP@L5 BVOP ASS Subtitles 2 tracks (XviD in MKV with dual subtitle tracks, a real challenge)

MKV h.264 480x320 30fps Baseline Profile Level 2.1 1 Reference Frame ASS subtitles (has moving subtitles that scroll across the screen)

MP4 h.264 720x464 30fps High Profile Level 3.0 CABAC 3 Reference Frames (MP4 with MP3 audio, not AAC, unusual video size)

MKV VP6F 400x304 30fps ASS subtitles (Mirror) (Mirror) (VP6 in MKV with MP3 audio, ripped from a FLV and put into a MKV for the subtitles, Archos 604 with plugin cannot handle it)

You don't have to test all these if you don't want to, I just tried to get samples of anything that anyone here might be interested in playing, as well as the most challenging material for those interested in the technical limits of this new Archos generation of hardware. Thank you for this thread!

These videos play fine on the A5IT. With the following exceptions:
-1080p video doesn't work.
-Embedded subtitle formatting isn't used (colors, fonts, placement) and are just placed at the bottom of the screen.
-I'm not sure about the videos with AC3 audio since the A5IT I had access to didn't have the plugin.

What I want to know is if videos that don't work on the current A5IT works on the new generation 8 tablets.
1280x720_high_4.0_ref8_3.6mbps_aac_2ch_128kbps_48khz_subass.mkv (Typical 720p anime that doesn't work. The video player crashes after 7 seconds.)

1280x720_high_4.1_ref3_4.6mbps_aac_2ch_128kbps_48khz_header_compression.mkv (Uses the header removal compression of the Matroska spec. This causes the A5IT to just display a black/blank screen with no audio. Just doesn't play.)

Hopefully these videos play.

Thank you.

Thanks for this info. I had a script using MKVToolnix that uses this by default, and another said the videos don't show on his Gen7 player. Now at least I know why.

Hopefully that will be fixed by Gen8. If not, I think the feature can be disabled, and it's a simple remux job.

Ya, since version 4.1.0 of MKVToolnix, they enable header compression by default for certain tracks. The developers of the tool say this feature has been part of the spec for over 6 years now and decided to make it default.

I'd also suggest to zalman to rename the files to reflect their characteristics, as with what glomgold did. I tried a few, and it's confusing to know which files test what.

I would also suggest to create a new topic and keep updating the first post with the files you tested. People who like to see files tested note the comment d00b made.

For future references and for people searching the forum this would be an improvement to keep things more organized.

Just my opinion it is no must :)

You got me there, but when I get my 101 I want to focus my little free time (busy day job and family) on open development. When however we keep updating the first post of a topic with relevant information it will be very easy to transfer it then to a wiki. Also for busy guys like nz it is very easy to follow a topic, by just viewing at the first post instead of reading 9 out of 10 uninteresting replies for him.

Thank you very much for testing them so far. It's good to hear that MKV with AC3 audio plays without the plugin. The Mazui Ookami MKV is interesting because it's not 720p but it does have a lot of reference frames. Sounds good so far!

Thank you very much for giving us more files to test. That header removal compression sounds like quite the problem setting!

Ok done, I have put all the clips I made into one big zip file and all the trailers/previews I found into another (combined they are too large) with one bonus file in each and renamed all the files inside as per d00b's suggestion (so now the file names are really long):

Test Clips: http://www.mediafire.com/?mpx327yaoqnm094
Test Trailers: http://www.mediafire.com/?jt7z2zz8aa9x9a0

Also I found a bonus not-quite-720p XviD AVI clip which shouldn't be a problem for the Archos but if anyone is curious here it is http://www.mediafire.com/?o64haw9envema64

There is a new update for the Archos 32 and the old Archos 5IT as well. I wonder if it helps with any playback issues, including the header compression one mentioned in this thread.

I don't go here often enough to even know that Archos employees read this forum. That's encouraging to know though. Maybe updates will improve the playback of those types of videos.
