Tethering blackberry bold 9700 to Archos 101

We have to find a solution for this, i am in love with both devices but they just dont seem to work together. There has to be some way of making this happen, and this thread is to find that solution, if anyone finds any way to tether any bb to the a101 then they should post the exact steps so we might be able to build off of that and find a way to make this work. Hopefully well get it going soon and everyone else will be able to benefit from this thread. Please post any insights or question.

P.S. i have heard that a common problem is that when you press the tether option on the a101 after already pairing the bb 9700 with it and setting up the tether profile, a progress circle comes up and says trying to tether or something along those lines and then freezes up the device, has this happened to anyone?

I had a BB 9700 and my eventual solution was a Samsung Vibrant rooted with MobileAP wifi... however I was going to make an app for it. I researched the internals for gen 7 and I suspect they are pretty close to the same for gen 8. The problem is that the tether doesn't allow for proper DUN functionality where a special dial sequence is required. Ironically that is not an issue with providers in France where the Archos is designed so it appears they still haven't fixed what they can't see.

My problem is I just don't care and I can't test it. If I could get some small amount for my time and a tester I'd consider building a tether app that extends what Archos does. I don't know how many people would buy it, but I can tell you that it will for sure work if it is done right and there isn't too much to it as it is all scripted internally in Linux and all the required functionality is there in the kernel and several required prograns... for me it's just motivation. I would Paypal someone $100 for a solution to tether my blackberry. I'am sure a lot of people would spend good money for this option as the cost for another phone or data plan would be much more

Im sure we would all deeply appreciate it if you were able to get it to work, i myself am very tight on money (divorce....wife took it all), but if you are able to do it, please try, i really need it as do many others.

You think? I think it's easy to tether a BlackBerry to a laptop, so that can't be it can it.

Don't take this wrong. I'm a grouchy old guy who was taught professionally to troubleshoot electronics since 1975, so instead of using guesses I use deduction, which is why I know your guess may have some reasonable basis, but fails the required proof.

I'm sure people would spend money on it too, or at least I was. Then again if I submit it to AppsLib I can see the next release from Archos making it obsolete.

I actually do have my 9700 but it's up for sale on ebay. I was too busy to list it. Point is my data plan doesn't support it so even if I wanted to keep it I still couldn't test it. That means I need a tester. I also need to know your carrier.

Anybody else want to chip in? I ask because I also run a business doing manufacturing, small construction projects, sales, software programming... I have a lot to do, but I'm old school. When I have a contract it moves to the top of my do list, which is why I am late on web site updates.

I will PM you and get your carrier information. After I have had a chance to go back and review my notes and cruise around the new gen 8 tree and see if it is pretty much the same I'd be ready to commit to doing it. I'm sorry I have to ask for money as I also do free software, but... The flip side is I'm only willing to commit to working with a tester willing to put money on it. That means we both have skin in the game.

BTW there are several tethering solutions for BlackBerry costing $50 that make it easy on desktop software. They require a desktop client! I tried them all, even ones that were supposed to work. Then I researched the Linux bluetooth stack and what the Archos is doing, which is not in Android, but below in Linux. I haven't done much with Android yet but develop desktop software in C++ and Java is easy enough to do for me. There is just is missing element for dial up networking. I found the place to insert it without mucking up the Archos scripts once but forgot where exactly. I know it can be done where it simply extends the Archos scripts and has an app or widget to control it.

Is there anyone else interested in putting some money toward this? I have no problem putting up the bigger portion if we can get some more people to commit to $20 or $25 each. This would be much cheaper than getting another phone for tethering. I have AT&T as a carrier and currently have a Blackberry 9000 but can upgrade to a newer model if need be.

Check out blackberry app world. there is software there called tether. cheaper than $100

Thanks singerdave! Have you done this yet? I'm afraid I'm a bit to much of a novice to get this all figured out. I'm attempting to get into the BB app world in my verizon bb. Just wondering if you can give me a few more details for after I find the app.

I'd pay $25 to $50 for a tethering option for Archos to Blackberry.

Its costs $100 and turns your phone into a wifi hotspot. Done some research but havent been able to confirm whether you need a provider tethering plan to use it or not.

One question i have is if one gets the cell phone providers tethering plan enabled for the Blackberry, does the current Archos tethering solution work? I understand we are all trying to utilize the Blackberry plan we already have with no additional charges for tethering, much like many of us already do with PC tethering solutions such as pdanet and tetherberry.

SUCCESFULLY TETHERED ARCHOS 101 to Blackberry 9300 - UAE (DU Network)

After lot of unsuccesful googling, found simple standard way of tethering worked for me. Archos101 - Firmware 2.4.19(Android 2.2.1).

Connect both Archos and blackberry by blue tooth (standard way)
Archos will show, "paired not connected"
Go to "set up Blue tooth" on blackberry.
Select the archos device that is paired
Click device properties of Archos
Disable Encryption
Go to settings -wireless & network - cell phone tethering
choose bluetooth
Go to Manual setting
Enter APN (get the value from your service provider (google in net to get your APN: enter username & passsword)
Enable - TCP/IP) header compression (Blackberry)
Enable - Prevent your device from sleeping
Enable - Tether

That's it !!! your blackberry will show "modem mode enabled" and your archos will show "connected by Tether" and will show phone symbol on right top corner of Archos screen.
