Smb on Windows 7: solved!

Has anyone gotten smb to work with a windows 7 computer? I can only get as far as the User Name and password dialog no matter how I set the sharing permissions on the W7 machine. Googling this turns up lots of folks with W7 smb issues and even a couple of sure fixes. Unfortunately they require access to "local security" settings in Administrative Tools and I have no such settings or shortcut in my Admin Tools panel???? Help! Pretty sure by the way that this is not an Archos issue or Android.

I'm not certain about this, just something to try. I think I did have some success in the end. I think I had to create a Guest User, complete with password, to get SMB to work.

Trying to login with existing User Accounts, whether Administrator or otherwise, on my laptop didn't work.

I've been doing other things on my A101 since then, so I'd have to go through it again to find out.

I solved it by uninstalling windows live 2011, many people having the same problem with all kind of samba clients.

Uninstalling Windows Live is not an option, as I use Writer every day to update blogs. I would uninstall the Windows Live ID Assistant, but it is not listed as a separate application in my uninstall dialog, and when I chose Unistall Windows Live 2011, it does not show up there either. ???

Give this a try. I could not get this smb to work for ever than I tried this.

In home network settings in win 7 I changed the encryption from 128 to the lowest setting. 30 or 40 something. Also set your password there in win 7 and use this password with your sign on user name. Also go to media player and set it to allow steaming under library. After I did all of this it started to work for me for all smb.

will try to explain as im not very computer literate,right clicked on folder i wanted to share then went to -share with- and specific people which opens a new window.Hit the drop down menu and pick everyone press add, and then press share.The password box came up on the archos but i just left it blank and it worked perfectly fine the only problem was after i pressed the back button after opening the folder it always force closes witch must be a bug in the software.Hope this helps took me ages to work this out

I don't have personal experience with this but a friend of mine got it working on his A101 by not only setting the permissions as described above on the root directory of the folder that he wanted to share but also doing the same on the subdirectories. I don't know if there may be an option when setting the permissions for the subdirectories to inherit the permissions of the parent that you setting them for.

Abundant blessings fall on the head of nspur. After a week of frustration the problem was fixed with two mouse clicks in Windows Share Manager!

Unfortunately Windows Share Manager has failed to work for me. I have fixed the individual share and clicked the "Sharing Registry Fix" and rebooted both the PC and the Archos 70 to no avail. Anyone else have this problem?

It used to work fine on Vista and XP but I've since retired those computers.


EDIT: It started working after I uninstall "Windows Live Essentials" and then reinstalled it. What is going on?

Thanks, that probably would fix my problem. However, that fix looks more painful to me than simply abandoning use of windows7. I guess I am stuck with Apple or other non windows OS's for feeding my Archos.

Removed Windows Live Essentials 2011 and the smb from stock file explorer on my A70 started working immediately.

I said win7; hopefully win8 will be simpler although it will also have to be complex about security because it is the system most under attack. I would like to see someone try your fix on my windows tablet without a keyboard and where any touch is a gamble about how it is interpreted.

Again your input is appreciated, but can't you see the spectacular level of nerdiness that is being taken as normal, just to do a simple consumer thing? I have used many computer systems since the 1970's for scientific and business purposes, and almost anything was more palatable than windows. Windows was popularized over better alternatives out of ruthless and devious marketing trickery in the 1980's, and left us with this terrible legacy.
