Thought I'd start a Tips thread that everyone can add onto.

1 - Download and install all the latest drivers (there's a separate Driver Guide listing all the latest ones)

viewtopic.php?f=50&t=29546

2 - Download and install all the Windows Updates

3 - If you want to do the Windows Anytime Upgrade (which people seem to be recommending for various added Tablet functionality), be sure to do #1 and #2 first

4 - You can squeeze out some additional performance by following some or all of the steps here:

http://snowulf.com/archives/637-Optimiz ... books.html

While I love the Aero look and features, I have to acknowledge the unit is generally zippier without all the special effects on. I now have everything off except the new icons (I can't stand the old Start button).

5 - You may have a better browsing experience by rotating the display vertically (90 degrees). Lock the keyboard to the bottom of the screen and you have a much better view. This also is great for eBook/Kindle reading.

6 - Given that you might want to avoid typing in general, load in all your favorites in advance to make browsing more efficient. Eventually Explorer 8 should keep your most visited sites readily available.

Thanks for the tips.

Relating to #5, does the 9 have a g-sensor and tilt the screen when you tilt the device, or is that a display setting?

No, you have to manually go into the control panel and adjust the settings to display in portrait mode. Would have been really greta if the device did this automatically though.

I agree, it would have been nice. Thanks for the answer, Jenna.

I'll add a "software to get" tip. Download VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html It's free, and plays anything I've found to try with it.

Check this thread, stickied at the top of this forum:

Archos staff are insinuating that VLC may play everything, but it may also not use any hardware acceleration in the CPU.

Keyboard Orientation

You can use Ctrl+Alt+Arrow to change the orientation of the keyboard. It's much easier than going into the Control Panel. ;-)

I've also tried using the Keyboard icon on the taskbar by going to Start button, right click Properties. Then click on the Toolbars tab and click in the Tablet PC Input Panel checkbox. It stays for a while but then disappears. Hmmm.

My Archos 9 do not shows the "Hibernate" option and when trying to activate it from a terminal screen (DOS) under Administrator it says that the firmware does not suport hibernation.

Any ideas ?

Thanks to all.

I have to admit, when I first got my Archos 9, I was disappointed. It's just too darn slow. Videos play great, after waiting for Media Player to load. Etc. Etc.

Ok... I did most of the suggestions originally posted in this thread. (I don't want to drop the money on Windows Home Version Pay More For)
Excellent.. performance is up.

Next, I use the tiny microSDHC reader I have with an 8 gig class 6 card and Windows ReadyBoost.
Holy crap! This thing is really starting to perform like I originally expected it to.

Lack of Windows tablet functions... here's a problem. The keyboard really isn't the greatest. So....

First downloaded ritePen 3.5 (Free 30 day Full function trail, $40 US for full)
http://www.ritescript.com/Default.aspx

Then it really got interesting. Last thing. I want to quickly rotate the screen.
CTRL+ALT+arrow does it... but a faster way...

ritePen has some cool macro settings, so now a "P" with a circle around it is Portait, and Landscape is the circled "L". (can be set up to any word in a circle, the possibilities are endless)

I really feel the money on the A9 was well spent now.

iPad looks like a mere toy now.

Wheeljack

Thanks for the tip about rite Pen. It adds the much needed pen support missing in Windows 7 Starter Edition. Clean interface and good handwriting recognition.

Excellent suggestion.

We wanted to share with you the release of ritePen 4.0 ÔÇÿTouchÔÇÖ at www.ritescript.com. The new version of our full-screen handwriting recognition, markup and desktop control software blends pen and multi-touch functionality: it allows finger writing on multi-touch screens and multi-touch gestures to control ritePen UI and ink editing on Windows 7.

A three-min. walkthrough video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdAP9FvpeMo.

This release also enhances ink commands, markup, integration with Evernote, adds new customizable toolbar system and support for any languages in the Windows Recognition Pack.

- The Ritescript Team

To keep your Archos 9 looking great for a long time, you may want to consider a Protective Skin Decal. TheyÔÇÖll make your Archos 9 look cool as well.

I received this keyboard as a gift about six months ago and I had forgotten about it. Today, while searching for a USB mouse, I found it. IÔÇÖm currently using it with my Archos 9 and it work just great. I like fact thatÔÇÖs wireless, has a wheel mouse and left and right buttons, has FN keys and itÔÇÖs so compact. Check it out: http://www.ortek.com/prod_detail.asp?pi ... 101&id=164

WIFI won't work? Try pressing the "A" and upper mouse buttons simultaneously.
