Hi,

I just uploaded video of Archos 9 booting to Android-x86. Mouse and touchscreen are not functional (yet). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gejdJcmAELs

Instructions:

1. Get a usb stick
2. Download Android-x86 from http://android-x86.googlecode.com/files/android-x86-1.6_usb.img.gz
3. Write image to usb stick with your favourite program (I used Win32 Disk Imager)
4. Boot Archos 9 and press A button to get boot menu, choose USB
5. I found VESA mode working, normal mode might be ok also.
6. Enjoy.

sexy!!! =D but that boot was a pain, not even counting the Bios part of the vid, XP could have loaded 2x in that time

Yeah, it's slow. And for the question why: mainly just becouse it's possible (what else motivates us to hack things?) and secondly to be able to get android apps. It's all about the apps, ask Steve J. if you need another opinion ;)

rofl but speaking from an uninformed developers point of view(okay kinda but still), you could pretty much run any app, the screen is big enough, theres enough muscle, no big problems, but as a dev, i dont really care about a device like this cause theres not really a big market for app for this, mainly due to the fact that not that many people really want a huge non-arm based tablet, but in general it sounds great. And lastly you should try android V2 it might have a faster boot but dont quote me on that, cause i think you were booting 1.5 correct?

Well I can confirm that android 1.6 runs just fine on the A9. I booted it off a USB drive wtb a keyboard and mouse plugged in as well. It runs super fast by far the fastest out of the 4 os's I've tried so far. The apps ran great except the wifi doesn't work. If someone could get the touchscreen, keyboard, and wifi working then I say android would by far be the OS of choice for the A9.

I'm intrigued. Anything to make the 9 more efficient is of interest to me. I've got the Archos 5 with Android and it does 95% of what I need a tablet to do.

One thing I don't want to give up: Printing. So far I've found no printer support for android and my home printers. Windows 7, for all it's foibles, at least handles WiFi to Printer printing from any app with relative easy.

Just a short question:

Does Android for x86 use an X11 server or does it need a framebuffer driver?
I guess there is no framebuffer driver for the GMA500?

I have been doing Android Hacking on my Google G1 Phone for some time now. I would be really interested in porting Android to Archos9. But there is no point in trying this if it depends on a framebuffer driver which we don't seem to have.

From what I've read you can get decent GFX support with the poulsbo X11 driver. Also there is a wifi driver which seems to work, so wifi should not be a problem, too. The touchscreen seems to work in a relative mode at least - if the drivers are open source it should not be too difficult to adapt them.

Is it possible to get the Archos 9 device with an Android Operating system? I love the Archos 9 and the way it's set up, but I really don't need Windows 7. That's what my laptop is for.

Doubtful. :( "Archos recommends Win 7" equals "M$ bullied us into it".

Got it running in VMWare with some sort of touchscreen support. But it is slow and the touch isn't aligned.
The mouse does work, and you will have the W7 keyboard for other interactions.
Still, not very useful, .. alas.

There is an driver for Linux, where is the one for Android. 'Someone' should release it ASAP. Really.
In the mean time still enjoying W7u.
