After about 100 gigs or so the device freezes while loading music and says "device has stopped responding or has been disconnected" after it does this it will no longer load anything even after rebooting. I have formatted it several times and started over and also loaded it on full charge in smaller batches, it still freezes. I am extremely frustrated! Can anyone help?

The two most likely causes are a bad connection/cable or disk corruption. I would try a different (known good) cable and also use a desktop or laptop to run a disk check - chkdsk on Windows, fsck on Linux/BSD/OS X. These devices are a few years old now and a hard disk in a portable could easily be at the end of its life.

The cables are fine and when I run DskChk it says " unable to fix errors"
Though it is an old model the device was a brand new replacement that they sent for another device that they couldn't fix. Thanks for your help, but now the thing won't even format or reboot!
Maybe they'll send me yet another replacement.

Well you definitely have a faulty disk. If the device isn't within the warranty period then maybe you can replace the disk yourself.
