I just replaced and charged a new battery for my A5 with android because the old one was only charging to 50 percent after 2 years of use.

Here is where to buy the battery

http://www.batteryspace.com/search.aspx?find=4358

Now first off the battery will fit and it has the correct amperage and of course voltage as a matter of fact its has 100 Milli amps more than the original.

Here IS THE IMPORTANT THING. You will have to remove the overcharge protection circuit from the original battery and install it onto the new battery, do not install the new battery without this PCB.

Cool - thanks for the heads up. Pretty sure there are quite a number here looking for this. Just on that last part - is it difficult to remove and reinstall the overcharge protection curcuit? Also - presume the replacement battery connection needs to be re-soldered?

Its not hard to remove and reinstall if you know how to solder, its a no brainer. Yes the battery needs to be resoldered, it 3 connections.

Does the A5A use the same spec and size battery as the A5IMT?

No, it's the model AFTER the A5IMT which runs on Android (which is based on Linux).

I need a picture because the only one I am familiar with after the A5 IMT is the A48

The A5IMT is Gen 6.

The A5IT (otherwise known as the A5A) is Gen 7.

The A48 was a short-lived device, created after the A5IT, but before the Gen 8 devices, out of the parts bin of the A5IT, by stripping out some of the hardware, like the GPS. They obviously had parts left, didn't have the Gen 8 devices ready, so cobbled together the A48 using some of the bits of the A5IT. They sold the A48 for a much cheaper price than its predecessor, the A5IT.

If you check the forums index here index.php and scroll down to the general heading "Internet Media Tablets", you will see "Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android", two above the "Archos 5 and Archos 5G (without Android)" - otherwise known as the A5IMT.

You should post this on the Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet forum, not here. But I noticed that the battery is big, which is unlike the battery for the A5 IMT. Maybe you mean the Archos 5 Internet Tablet (Android)?

I assumed Niceguy is talking about the a5a (android). Unfortunately the names of both devices are close enough to confuse.

@Niceguy - can you confirm this battery replacement is for the a5a (Android)? Thanks,

Thanks for clarifying - that was the answer I was hoping you would give....

Although my battery life still appears fine after around 16 months (not the hard drive - but that's another story) I might get one in anticipation given the low price and potential uncertainty of supply going forward....

Unfortunately, shipping to Canada is $84...

For this battery replacement, does it matter which size Archos you have? Will this battery work on the 500g version?

Battery size and type is no different whether flash or hard drive based.

But -> agree on the shipping raised :x About same price to Aus but looks like you also have to pay a hazardous handling cost on top which would bring the shipping to something like $120...

Not sure how a $13 item can end up costing you $120...

Looks like I wont be getting one just to have one on hand.....

I would be extremely surprise if the flash model uses the same AMPERAGE battery since a mechanical hard drive uses more current than flash memory, so I would assume archos would have used a lower current battery for the flash version.

But yes his battery will work on the 500 gig model also, the differences in hard drive sizes has absolutely nothing to do with amp hour.

Sorry international guys, even if I bought it for you the cost to ship from me to you would be the same because of the haz mat extra fee

The new battery works and last longer than the original when it was new, I got 4.5 hours of video with 20 percent left.

This thread could not have come at a better time.

Two days ago I noticed 'stress circles' in a certain area of the screen of my A5IT 16GB whenever I touched the screen.

Today the A5IT just felt different in my palms. There was a bulge on the back. I have been reading posts on this forum for quite sometime now and right away figured the problem was a swelling battery.

My screen was not broken and knew that I had to salvage it.
I followed instructions from this post and got my A5IT opened, with some difficulty though.
I am quite the virgin when it comes to hardware modding.
I just knew that I had to get it opened to save that screen.

My challenge now is to get this new battery.
It will take about a month or 2 to have in hand.
I will try to ship to a US address and then forward to my country Saint Lucia by sea.
Hope I do not have any exorbitant HazMat fees to pay.

Shipping back to place of purchase (Best Buy-bought in Dec 2009 via web), or directly to Archos, are not options.

It still boots up. I tried it.
Now that's a good sign.

I really hope I can get my baby back up!
This will be my first ever soldering project.
Wish me luck.

I will need it and some tips too. lol

Is this HazMat regulation an American thing? I've been buying batteries from the Far East, into the UK, for years without any hint of any issue. Is it a post 9/11 thing maybe?

HazMat regulation seems to be widespread.
It just seems like the US carriers are making some money off it by charging plenty money for the extra cardboard.
