Hi, I'm a newbie here... This morning, while surfing away, the screen popped up letting me know there was new firmware. I clicked on OK, then after all was downloaded, clicked Install. It asked me to attach to the USB, which I did (USB connected to PC). I walked away, came back, and the Archos was off. I then removed the USB connection. Now, when I turn it on, the "Archos, entertainment your way" screen comes on, it stays there for quite a while, then promptly turns off.

I'm worried I've hosed my lovely, new Archos 5. Can anyone help me address/fix this?

Many thanks for any info.

hey dude no worries, if you can at least see that boot splash then you're fine.

Firstly you'll need to download the latest firmware manually (which you can find on the http://www.archos.com site) Then you'll need to reflash the firmware. You wil need gen/generation 7 firmware.

Once you have the firmware file downloaded. Switch on the archos whilst holding a volume button (and keeping it held). A white screen should eventually display with several options. You can navigate up/down with the volume buttons and a short press on the power button will enable you to select your options. This is the recovery menu.

At this point you may have to install some 'ext' drivers on your PC to have access to the linux-formatted archos storage space (unless you are allready running linux at which point you need not worry about this). You should proably consult http://wiki.archosfans.com for a more detailed explanantion of this as i'm not familiar with the process myself.

Finally, back to the archos recovery menu, select "repair disk" and you will be prompted to connect your archos to your PC via usb. If everything has gone smoothly thus far you should be able to browse the storage partition on the archos. Place the firmware file that you downloaded on the root directory of the archos and then safely remove the archos. At tthis point the recovery menu on the archos should recognise the firmware file and begin reflashing it for you automatically.

Let us know how it goes, you'll probably find more instructions on the wiki or even on http://www.archos.com (videos too sometimes).

cheers

How about amending the thread title to "Firmware Version 2.0.38/1.9.26 released - Report bugs here"?
Bug? No more TV Out? Or just me? I'm on 2.0.38.
When I "dock" either of my Archoses on my DVR station or Battery dock, I get no "TV Out? dialogue".
Can't find a way of changing output to TV now. Yet...

EDIT: Phew, back now, after a reboot. Thanks blokey.
Ever get that feeling you spoke too soon?

when i attach my battery dock the "accessory connected, do you want to switch to tv now?" screen shows with a notification in the notification bar too just as before.

Well, at least this one seems to work "Audio: improve choppy voice audio on some android applications". The Copilot choppy voice issue is solved, after all this time. At last.

The overall volume is still less than 1.9.21 was, but it's enough for me. Apart from that, everything I do seems to work so far.

So it looks like I'm finally off of 1.9.xx.

So what's all this new fangled "full screen" stuff about?

(Only kidding)

I spoke far too soon. Rebooting after any kind of change is an automatic must do. It just looked so normal sitting there, staring at me. So it wasn't just me then? :}

Thanks for finally sorting the Copilot sound problem, by the way. That's kept me away from 2.0.xx until now.

Do you know if the "TV Snap In" will still work with the new firmware?

This will be the first update since I got it. Nervous to say the least

Edit

Odd, I'm being told I'm up to date with 2.0.28.

Well, I've removed each 2.0.xx one so far, after installing, but not this time. I might just keep this one. Just copied it to my "Downloads" folder and clicked on it - nothing complicated.

I like it.

Several goes later and it's still telling me I'm up to date. Am I missing something basic?

The firmware download section of the Archos website is unclear to people that 1.9.26 isn't really a "previous" firmware, so much as it is a non-3D accelerated version of 2.0.38. As I recall, in the past, the website made this distinction clear, now it may confuse people.

+1 Buster. I noticed that too. It should be called "a 2D alternative" or similar.
