Best Buy is doing a lot of marketing for Archos 5 Internet Tablet at the moment: http://phandroid.com/2009/10/25/best-bu ... pod-touch/

Hmm I've had a few to drink tonight but even I can see that the spec is incorrect, it's not a 1ghz processor lol. Also I wonder what the pixel density/ screen size ratio is, probably not too much between them. And I wonder finally what will get more returns lol. Oh I can't wait till archos make a phone, can u immagine. Yes folks, it will make a call in a future firmware update. But look at the beautiful screen lol

Looking at the battery life thread, no one has got anywhere near 40h of audio playback from the device. I get maybe 5 with my hard drive based model.

If you have WiFi, Bluetooth running and the screen brightness turned to maximum you won't get the most music playback out of the battery.

Android power management is a very powerful and detailed thing one needs to try to control to use most effectively. Next versions of Android 1.6 and 2.0 should make all these Android power management things more user friendly.

I would add a few corrections to Best BuyÔÇÖs comparison:

- TV output on the Archos is actually up to 1280×720 using the HDMI output on the HDMI Mini Dock or DVR Station.

- HD 720p Content support is not only H264 High Profile for Archos, it is also for DivX, XviD and WMV. While the iPod Touch does not support any HD content not even of H264 Baseline profile.

- The GPS map licence on Archos is only if you want to use the suggested Ndrive Android GPS in-car navigation software. But you can use any other Android GPS software that is available on the market, including free applications where GPS map licences are free or ad-supported.

There are some very wrong information in there.

Capacity: it should say up to 500GB

Processor: it is a ARM Cortex A8 @ 800Mhz

Battery life: it is 22 hours music and 7 hours of video

TV output is 1280x720

HD content: Apple doesn't support HD. It supports SD at baseline profile H.264. The 5 supports 720p (HD) at HIGH profile, not main.

Archos also supports DivX, XviD, WMV, all in 720p. MPEG 2 (aka DVD) is supported through a plugin.

I really hope Bestbuy would get its information right next time

I keep saying that archos hasnt even tested the battery life on the Android as per the disclaimer on the specs page on the Archos site. They tested the 5 and with brightness at the absolute minimum.

Which means to me that there is no stated battery life for the device.

40 hours battery life is a joke....
32KBit MP3 coded files?

Sorry, I don┬┤t like marketing statements.

You can beat the ipod with one word. FLAC, not with the battery life. :p
The other one is, Archos uses "Apple methods", remember the A5 (A) has a non-removable battery!
Remember, I must pay for standards like cable etc.
Remember, Archos uses own propr. jacks.

This is "Apple enough" for me :!:

At the end of the day an iPod is going to suit some people and a Archos might suit others. They have their own strengths and weaknesses. Certainly the iPod is miles more stable and reliable than the Archos at this point.

So why the need to say one thing 'destroys' the other. Just buy whatever has the features and price that suits you.

Wireless N is of no use. The Archos implementation does not support more bandwith than G

What matters more is the range and the speed to connect, disconnect and roam.

Very few WiFi-N routers and devices actually support the 300mbit/s 5ghz theoretical limits of the N standard. 5ghz also has much shorter range which defeats the main advantage of WiFi-N technology.

And yet they state right there that you can get 40 hours (unless "h" has a different meaning than hour) of playback time listening to audio.

I have my Archos set up with wifi and blue tooth turned off, all useless applications uninstalled, screen off, and I get exactly 5 1/2 hours of playback from a full charge. That's no where close to 40 hours. I would be happy with 10 or 12. That's about a days worth of listening. But 5 and a half?

A couple of years ago I read a CNET review that compares the Archos 605 wifi and the iPod Touch. I can still find it: http://reviews.cnet.com/4370-11399_7-312-101.html

That crazy review says the Archos 605 beats the iPod touch. Since even the 605 beats the iPod touch, there is no wonder that the A5A beats it too and becomes the "fastest in the world."

The truth is the 605 is a piece of junk, and is nowhere even near the league of the iPod touch. I say this because I own both and I draw the conclusion from my own experiences. Archos 605 is better in one aspect: it has better resolution and it can play multiple video formats. It loses in all other departments. I do not own an A5, but judging from all the posts I read here, there is no way it can beat the iPod touch.

Perrin21's point is exactly right: it comes down to software, not just the hardware. Most people are used to reading magazines that compare hardware across difference PCs and naturally believe that you can do the same for hand-held devices. But all PCs run the same operating system, which makes the hardware comparison much much more sensible. The iPod touch is so stable that you can trust it to provide the right functionality when you need it. The archos 605, "the last stable archos" according to some posts in this forum, still crashes on me every single day (yes I have the latest firmware).

A couple years ago, 605 WiFi (4GB) at $199 was way better value than the iPhone (8GB) at $599 + $2000 contracts.

Today, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet (8GB) at $249 MSRP $200 street price is way better value than the iPod Touch (8GB) at $199.

If you read the review, you will see it is not just about "better value". It compares all aspects of the two devices.
