Sat Sep 19, 2009 4:02 am List of .apk files that work - testing, screenshots/videos
It's confirmed that Archos 5 Internet Tablet can install any Android application by simply downloading the .apk file for the Android application to the Archos storage and double clicking on it. For Android applications that we think are cool and that are not yet listed on the http://appslib.com, I suggest we post all the links we can find in this thread, so users of the Archos 5 Internet Tablet can test those Android applications and report back, eventually with screenshots and videos to tell us how well (or bad) each of these apps are working! And then from there we might even perhaps try to reach out to the Android applications developpers to see if they want to optimize their cool apps to work on Archos's 800x480 touchscreen and on its 1280x720 HDMI HDTV output also optimized to be controlled using the remote control or perhaps even better using a Bluetooth or USB Keyboard and mouse combo. List your links to Android .apk files here and let's start the testing! If you cannot find the .apk file, you can name the app that you like and someone else can try to see if they can find the .apk file and link to it. Warning! Some of these links might not be distributed officially by the developers, they might not be legal, and may not even install the right things on Android, though I doubt one could install malicious software, viruses or anything like that that could harm your device. Though consider that before installing .apk files from these links. It would be obviously preferable to have official links to download these applications from the developers official websites.

The last link contains pirated software (DoggCatcher alone costs $6.99).

i wonder will android apps have access to the gps, video, music and picture features on the archos. Like will be able to use an alternative gps program without any problem, or if there was a movie trailer plugin would it be able to stream trailers from within the plugin. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

This Android Emulator plays old arcade games, some from mame -and a lot from finalburn alpha: http://g-arcade.appspot.com/There's links to roms on the website. Controls will most likely not work unless someone already has a keyboard or joystick connected to their Archos Android. I just want to see if the program can run and load games.

I'd delete the DoggCatcher link, but how can one know which of the applications are pirated and which not? Until there are reliable ways to access some kind of library over all .apk files legally, I don't think it's wrong that we link to whatever we can find for now as testing. To see if some of the apps work at all and to reach out to the developers to adapt their applications for 800x480. If you know a definite URL where one can easily have access to all the .apk files legally, please post it!

That is a policy I just can't agree with. If you can't get it through a legal channel (e.g. AndAppStore, Appslib, or SlideME), then complain to the developer about making it available on one of those Markets. Do you really think that saying "Oh, hi, I downloaded a copy of your app from a pirate site and it doesn't work. Can you fix it?" is going to win any friends in the Android community?, the gut reaction will most likely be "If they downloaded a pirate copy for free once, aren't they just going to download another pirate copy when it works well on their platform?" In your shoes I'd delete any post or link to any site that contains pirated software.

I deleted the "bunch of apps" link since you told me there is pirated DogCatcher app on there. I didn't know. I just did a basic Google search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.apk+downloadYou could do the same for anything that you are looking for. For example Gmail: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.apk+gmailLet's find those apps and link to them here. If anyone knows of directory one can consult which clearly states which apps are free and which are not, then please post here so we can try to not link to pirated software from this thread. Would you recommend people try to install the AndAppsStore client: http://andappstore.com/AndroidApplications/apps/7661 ? Is that apk downloading client optimized for 800x480 screens?

Use http://www.cyrket.com/The top right box allows you to search for an app, if it comes up with a price then it's pirated.

Apps that I would suggest we find .apk files to try:
Picasa Media Uploader - Can one dump all photos from ones digital camera onto the Archos using USB host of Mini Dock and then upload all the pictures directly to Picasa Web Albums?
vTap video search - Does it launch all the video search results using Archos web video player? Does it allow to filter video search results according to the codecs supported by the player for streaming and for progressive playback?
TuneWiki - Does it play from all the songs stored on the Archos Music directory?
Last.fm Personal Radio - Does this app play any Last.fm radio among recommended radio, loved tracks, artist search. If this app was able to buffer hours of music in advance over WiFi to continue playing back even while offline? Can it interact with all the music files stored on the Archos to play recommendations from those, to count and monitor all playbacks from those and to allow for rating of those as well?
Imeem Mobile Pandora Radio Magnatune Amazon Music Store
Ustream Android Broadcaster - Can it work with the Headmounted camera or a USB Webcam?

THis would be great. BOINGO for wifi connection. Archos is not included but Android devices are there and the itouch is included as well. Hopefully Archos Android works. Have sent them an email to see whether they can include Archos Android on their list. http://mobile.boingo.com/support/supported_devices.php

What I don't get, everyone posts here... but what is the point if nobody gives even a reaction if something is already working on the Archos 5 Android? :?

There are very few people who have received their devices so there is no way of knowing whether these applications work or not. For now all we can do is post something and when more people have their devices I am sure they will start testing some of the applications. By listing them now we know where to look for them and we know they exist. The only 64GB question is will they work?
