Re: Bluetooth tethering & AD-Hoc Wifi

So I've scoured and searched through this thread and others, but I still cannot seem to find a resolution to my tethering issue.

I'm using a BB Tour 9630 (which according to the wiki is listed as functioning) and my provider is Sprint. I found a stray post on this thread [edit: see quote below] that suggests using "internet.com" for the APN with no username or password is the correct combo. My A5IT synchs with my phone ("paired but not connected") no problem but when I go to enable tethering it just loads for a minute before giving the error "unable to connect by tethering".

Any thoughts? If I've overlooked something please feel free to give me a good boot to the head and point me in the right direction. Thanks you guys! I love my A5IT and this forum is a phenomenal resource <333
jcelano wrote:I simply paired the A5A to my BB and then enabled tethering on my A5A and used "internet.com" as the ADN or whatever it asks for...

Be sure to make the A5A "discoverable" (under bluetooth settings) and the 9630 will find it right away... Don't worry that it says "paired but not connected" - I was able to get to the internet just fine

Let us know how it goes...

Hey how did you get yours to work?

Does anyone know if o2 have blocked tethering?

My phone said something about needing packet switching when I first tried to tether but hasn't mentioned anything since

Help! I can't BT tether my Moto Droid to my A5IT! Before you guys start flaming, I have spent hours searching this and other forums. You guys seem to have the most knowledge base so i'll start here.

I have a rooted Moto Droid running Froyo 2.2
My A5 has the most current firmware 2.0.38 with the Google Market hack

I have found a lot of conflicting info regarding APN (some say I need it, some say I don't); regardless, I am able to get my A5 to "pair but not connected". When I enter the Cell Phone Tethering menu, I entered the APN info first (myphonenumber.vz3g.com) and left the username/password blank. Then I selected my Bluetooth Phone ID. At this point, the Tether option becomes available, but Tether Protocol is ghosted out. When I check Tether, it tells me I need to configure the Protocol. Oh and it also tells me the Droid does not support tethering...

On my Moto Droid, I also have the following apps at my disposal:
Barnacle WiFi
Wireless Tether
PDAnet

BONUS QUESTION
Not sure if this is possible, but I would like to stream my music via BT in my car. I am currently able to do it with my droid and friends' iphones. Has anyone tried this or does the A5 even supports this function? I have been successful in pairing the A5 in my car, but it recognizes it as a phone, and so far have been unsuccessful in streaming music.

Flattery will get you everywhere :-)

I have a similar setup to yours - rooted Android 2.2 phone. I'm using "Wireless Tether" in bluetooth mode. Start the Wireless tether on your phone before proceeding to the Archos. Also make a note of the *APN* of your default APN (the one used for internet connection), not the name. The APN is listed after the name. You should also note the username and password (usually anything works here, e.g. "internet" and "internet", depends on carrier tho). In my example, the APN name is "MTN ZA", but the APN is "myMTN" (which is what I used on the archos), and the username and password are both "mtn".

On your Archos, enter the information, including username and password, then select the Tether option. It may take a few attempts and even a reboot, but at some point (I know I did a bit of hair pulling) the Tether Protocol becomes available (I think the Archos tries to query the device for the protocol first). Make sure you select PAN, and once all this is saved, you should be good to go. Reboot again if it doesn't want to tether. The bluetooth stack can be a bit unstable that way, but usually once it's set up, it works pretty flawlessly.

Thanks a lot for your help Toby! I haven't gotten it to work yet, but I'm gonna try rebooting till I get it working. Forgot to mention that I am on Verizon and since my initial post, I have found more info on the Moto Droid. This may or may not work on other android devices, but you guys can test it out and let me know.

The Droid has a Voice Dialer App that when you open it up and say "APN", it will open a window with all your current APN settings :) I was unaware of this function. There are many more useful tools here and here's a link to the actual disscussion on Motorola's own forum:

In the interest of helping people out here, I tried the following:

- Remove the APN name from the Archos
- Untick the username/password checkbox
- Tether protocol still set to "PAN"

My Archos still tethered fine with my Cyanogen 6 rooted HTC Dream running Wireless Tether.

So the lesson is that APN and username/password don't matter at all for PAN Bluetooth tethering. They are only needed for DUN Bluetooth tethering, like on a Windows Mobile phone.

You can add the LG 'Versa'. SW version VX960V7D to the list.

I'm new to this forum so am not sure whether I'm posting this in the correct place, but here goes anyway.
I bought an Archos 5 Internet Tablet 8GB in December 2010 and am very impressed with its design, capabilities and the range of software available. The firmware version is 2.0.38. One of the main purposes I had in mind when I purchased was to tether to a Samsung Monte S5620 3G phone on Virgin Mobile UK. Having failed to do this and not being sure whether the problem was the tethering or incorrect APN and user information, I switched the SIM card from the Monte to an old and well worn LG KG290 Rhino. I had very low expectations of success but, surprise surprise, found that I was able to tether successfully and access the internet! I guess thatÔÇÖs another one that could be added to the list of phones that successfully tether, though itÔÇÖs probably too outdated to be of much interest to most.
I have found little information on connection settings for Virgin Mobile UK, but the details I found to work, which may be useful to others, were:-
APN goto.viginmobile.uk
User wap
Password wap
This is not an ideal solution because it means switching the SIM card about and the access is fairly slow because it is GPRS rather than 3G. I would still like to get the Monte to tether, or alternatively an LG KP500, which is still only GPRS, but is at least a reasonably up to date touch screen phone.
When I try to tether the Monte, it appears to successfully connect and the phone icon appears at the top of the Archos screen, but I am not able to connect to the internet using the Archos browser, which gives the message that the page is not available. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting several times, but there is still no internet access. I have also turned the phoneÔÇÖs remote SIM mode on and off to no avail.
When I try to tether the LG KP500 I always get the message that the Archos is unable to connect by tethering and have tried changing the remote SIM mode, which is the only obvious setting on the phone that looks as if it might affect things. I was hopeful that I would be able to connect this phone once I knew the APN and user details were correct because it is on the list of phones on this forum that have been tethered successfully.
Any suggestions on other things I could try with either the Monte or the KP500 would be appreciated.

There is a lot of information about tethering available on this forum - also it is mentioned that this should work to a Nokia E71 (using Android 2.2.1 on the Archos) - but I cannot find a clear description of steps anywhere. Does somebody have a pointer to additional information concerning the Nokia E71? Thanks in advance!
PS: my laptop does bluetooth tethering to the Nokia E71 without any problem, for the Archos however I cannot get this to work.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new community member, this is my very first post. Just to give you some info. I came from Maemo community, which are populated with linux nerds (Im not one unfortunately

ok so here it goes... my first contribution. Mods please add this phone from the list of phones that is working.

been working for this for 3 days. I almost gave up until I discovered ICS software for winmo.

connection settings between Archos 5 IT and Samsung Omnia i900 wm 6.1

needed on samsung omnia:

-ICSInstall.cab

Instructions:
-turn on bluetoot of both devices
-pair Omnia with Archos 5 IT
-open ICS, choose Bluetooth PAN as type of connection and choose the connection source (either contract internet, w3glab etc. etc.) in my case I choose Contract INternet. Click Connect (if there's no error ... it got connected )
-from Archos: go to settings, wireless settings, cellphone tethering, select the protocol choose your Omnia Connection.
-now configure APN settings at the bottom:
(search on google for list of APN settings for your network)
I am using a vodafone connection so:
APN: Internet
UN: Web
PW: Web
-click on tether and you'll get a notification that you've successfully tethered your archos with your phone.

additional note: if you turn off your bluetooth in your archos 5 IT, you'll lose your tether connection (obviously ) now if you turn it back on don't expect you'll get connected automatically. you need to go back to tether settings and check the box again.

goodluck!
