Ok, now I feel like an ass. I totally forgot about that setting! I now see the whole screen so no cropping is going on BUT the resolution is def different somehow. I used Gerald's Resolution app and it says 711 x 217 like his does but someone said that's not accurate?

A bit confusing but I'm so glad I found out the problem on formatting on webtv videos. If you hadn't said that, I wouldn't have known! I probably would have discovered that a bit later on lol

I believe you can click menu->format and select the size you want. This is while you are playing the video.

I just bought the Archos 5it and now is using the firmware v1.7.33 but it was not stable enough for daily use.
Can anyone tell me whether the new firmware v1.7.77 is better or worse than v1.7.33?
Thank you very much!

FYI BlackBerry 9700 T-Mobile not tethering. It won't allow me to choose DUN or PAN as it is disabled however clearly work has been done here. Hopefully soon we will see BlackBerry tethering.

Hi terminatorhk,

Saying the 5A with 1.7.33 is not stable for daily use. Doesn't tell us much. Would you please list what "daily use" is?

For example:
  • Web Browser - 25% use - 85% acceptable -Switches format unexpectedly sometimes
HD Video in AMC - 50% use - 10% acceptable - Locks up and crashes
ePublication - 10% use - 95% acceptable - Nice experience, like better Help

    And So On ...
Let us know what your daily use is and we can better answer your question. Otherwise, my Answer is: YES ... NO ... MAYBE

Thanks,

Allen

Hi, Allen,

What I found is,
1. the headphone doesn't work sometimes so that I have to restart the machine;
2. the wifi may disconnected sometimes and I have to turn it off and on again for reconnection, it is annoying;
3. the preview function of RMVB file is fine when it was firmware 1.4.xx, but it crashed on 1.7.xx. (I couldn't downgrade to fw 1.4.xx anymore)

Thank you very much for your reply, Allen.

Yea the headphone issue is something a lot of us have dealt with. I am not sure if only a select few of us experience this but all of us agree that it doesn't occur often enough to be a major inconvenience. I don't recall nz ever acknowledging this issue. So far a reboot is the only known solution. I haven't been able to reproduce .the problem at will.

Aloha terminatorhk,

The headphone issues have been brought up several folks. I don't remember any fixes. So that could be enough to return or RMA your 5A. Let some other folks reply before you get too concerned about my reply.

Quite a few folks have had a variety of WiFi issues, partly because there are so many ways to connect to so many different WiFi routers. I occasionally get drops, but not too often. It takes my 5A about two minutes to connect to my WEP WiFi router. I haven't done anything to try to improve on that because I've got two other devices on the router and I'm lazy about changing. And the time delay hasn't changed for me between 1.6.08, 1.7.31 and 1.7.77.

I don't know anything about RMVB files so some else will have to address that.

In general my experience from firmware 1.4.25 on has been very positive and stable, including from 1.6.08 on with the Market Hack. The 5A has taught me when to slow down, when to kill apps and when to turn off HW features. On the whole it's been very stable for me.

Best to ya,

Allen

No, the WIFI disconnect/reconnect thing was definitely a gift that came with 1.7xx.

I think it happens when the signal goes weak. Then connectivity stops. Oh, the A5 says it's connected, but only an off/on will restore it.

And yes, it is extremely annoying.

The first I experienced WiFi disconnect with 1.7.77. I have so little time connected that 1.7.33 could have had it to and I wouldn't have noticed. With 1.7.77 disconnect is rather infrequent given my limited use of WiFi.

Just installed 1.7.77.

- YouTube app does work again (didn't do so with 1.7.71)
- Rush-Hour doesn't crash anymore after completing a level
- Market still works
- Bluetooth DUN tethering still works

Bluetooth tethering could still be improved though.
For example, it does not reconnect after sleeping and needs to be toggled off/on.

Anyway, this is a good update and a keeper for me. :D

Simpler? Are you sure you know all that's required? It's much more complicated than the ADB way - that's if it works at all. It doesn't work for me, and I've spent 3 full days om it.

I think you ought read up on ALL that's required to do it.

ehhh? the free market hack is much simpler... download an apk file, install it, restart, sign in. much simpler.

you're having very individual trouble getting the paid apps working, not the market hack.

Sorry WTG. You're quite right - apologies to all.

UPDATE:

Today I ran the Paid Apps Script, AND IT WORKED. Finally. 1.7.77 ?

I've been so obsessed with this over the past few days, I forgot about getting the basic Market Hack to work in the first place.

Phew!

EDIT: Of course my comment stands for anyone expecting to get the Market Hack with Free Apps to work.

That's strange. The 1.7.xx firmware seemed to fix my WiFi disconnect issues. Up until that one, WiFi was very unstable for me. I wonder if the router you are connecting to has something do with this. Maybe Archos tweaked the setting and now it works better with my router, a Netgear Wireless N, but made it less compatible with the one your using?

On mine, the Wifi "fails" when it's been left untouched for a while - don't ask me how long, with Wifi enabled and connected.

The most obvious example of this is when I put it on the DVR Station overnight. In the morning it still shows as connected to my router, but the browser cannot access web pages. Switching Wifi off and back off again fixes it. It doesn't show as disconnected, but, in reality, it is.

Maybe I should just get into the habit of switching Wifi off when I'm not going to use it for a while. It'll save battery life too.

Come to think of it, I have Wlan switched off on my phone "until needed".

By the way, I do have Powersave disabled.

Same issue. No problems connecting, but when left for a while, I have to turn wifi off/on to actually get connected to the router again. I do NOT have powersave disabled.

Ok, so yours is going off because you've set it to save power. While mine is going into a huff after being ignored for a while. Are there male and female Archoses?
