I don't care about size or efficiency of transfer, I want the best looking picture I can get on my device without forking over 15 or 30 bucks for new formats. No format is a problem, so the most beautiful picture, once again, is what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

What is your source?

If it is a DVD source, then the best format is to simply leave the DVD rip as is (ie .vob files). That means no conversion, no quality loss, the Archos will play it with the exact same quality on the disc. You will need the Cinema plugin for this.

I always rip my DVD's to .avi format. Woks great, crystal clear picture. Does crash occasionally, but I think thats more an Archos issue rather than the DVD ripper

This question is a moving target.
Back in the 90's MPG's were the norm.
These days AVI's are the most portable (XVID & H264)
MP4's are becoming common in spite of Microsoft.
MKV's are up and coming in spite of their huge sizes due to its flexability.
