Yeah I'm pretty sure you'll need alot more amperage than the computer provides to get a quick charge. Iirc its about 2 amps.

If you can find a cig lighter adapter with 2amp charging(i just saw one on amazon the other day) and a good usb to 3mm charger port, it should work. I bought a cheap one and I dont think it carries the full 2amps the griffin power block I bought supplies. I need to find a way to test that out...
newmp3technology sells this http://www.newmp3technology.com/mc101.htm for car charging, but it's only rated for 1 amp at 6v, where the supplied charger for the gen 8s is 5v 2amp. I'd look for something closer to the stock one.

I wanted to chime in as I just bought a A101 and had this problem after a week of ownership. I did fix it myself without turning it in, based upon a post in a forum I found via Google. If it won't turn on, plug in the charger, and the USB to a computer. That will get it charging again. Also, go into the display settings and change the setting for sleeping from Never to anything else (I set it to 10 minutes). I also chose to use the Deep Sleep option in Power Management. The problem appears to have gone away now.
It seems Archos devices have a tough time charging if their battery gets drained to the bottom, or if they are in extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold). Mine is car that was hot from the sun for a little while when this problem happened. Anyway, the steps above fixed it.

I had a charging problem with my Archos 101. Right after I did a firmware update, the battery icon had a single red bar and a lightning bolt charging indicator, but it did not have the cycling green lines to indicate that it was charging. I tried rebooting and mounting with USB, nothing changed. When the state of the icon did not change for for 20 I decided to check the Archos support site. I did a live chat with a support rep. They told me unplug everything and then press and hold the power button for 45 seconds. This seems to have worked. The battery icon immediately indicated 16 minutes remaining with a yellow bar. I plugged it in and the battery icon started animating with green lines. I unplugged again and it's up to 33% so far. Here's the live chat text:

15:36:48 Thank you for contacting us. An operator will be with you shortly...
15:36:48 Jake: Archos 101 will not charge immediately after I updated the firmware
15:37:24 Operator Andrew joined the chat
15:37:30 Andrew: Hello! Welcome to our support.
15:37:41 Andrew: Is this the Archos 10.1 Internet Tablet or the Archos 10.1 G9?
15:38:05 Jake: internet tablet

15:39:38 Andrew: Are you plugging into the top or bottom hole on the side of the unit?
15:39:57 Jake: bottom. green light is on

15:43:16 Andrew: Unplug the unit from everything and hold down the Power button for 45 seconds. After 45 seconds release the Power button but keep the unit unplugged. Try turning the unit on. What reaction, if any, do you get out of the unit now?

15:43:38 Jake: ok hold on
15:46:17 Jake: now there's a number 16 on the battery icon

15:46:30 Jake: should i try plugging in power?
15:47:06 Jake: and it has a yellow line. before it was red

15:48:05 Andrew: Yep plug back into power now
15:49:14 Jake: ok now it seems to be charging because the battery icon is animated with green lines

15:49:35 Jake: thanks

15:49:46 Andrew: You're welcome
15:49:54 Jake: do you have a reference number in case I have the problem again?
15:50:07 Andrew: Unfortunately I do not
15:50:29 Jake: ok, i'll see how it goes. thank you
