It's been great, and still is. It plays everything I need it to, and has enough memory to keep me interested. But I've had it for years now, and soon it'll fail.

What do I get next? The Archos with Android is only android 1.6, so is pretty much defunct. The Cowon sounds a bit glitchy. I don't want an I-phone.

Is anyone else exploring their options?

Gen8? Or, you could get into hacking it and trying to port android yourself to it, or deving for linux. What do you mean it'll fail soon? Battery, hard drive, or something else?

I believe there is a Gen8 4.8, or at least 4.3. I have the 70 and I love it. As all Archos, it has it's flaws, but nothing I can't overcome.

I mean that something'll fail. The battery, the drive, the sockets. Something. Stuff like this isn't meant to last forever. I don't really want to hack it, I'd rather have something out of the box.

Anyway, it's not imminent. I was just starting to open my eyes to the possibility so I know where to look when it does go pop.

I'll have a look at the gen8 stuff. cheers.

Hmm... Just looked at the website and can't see anything with a 5 inch screen. 7 is too big for me really.

i might be being bling though.

There are a number of competitively priced tablets on the market nowadays, which I think are looking quite attractive. The one's I've looked at recently, are running android @ version 2.3 and an entry level one (i.e. the Scroll essential) is priced at around 69 pounds Sterlling. their only shortcoming, as far as I can see, is storage capacity, coming with around 2Gb, and only expandable to around 32 with micro SD cards.

My Archos 5 is over 3 years old now, and whilst I can't complain about the storage capacity, and it does most of what I want, it is now starting to show it's age in terms of performance.

I myself am therefore certainly considering an upgrade to a tablet in the new year....
