hey all, ive been an archos owner and fan for a few generations of product now - i started with an av420 which i loved, and then upgraded to a 604wifi. now my battery is dead it seems, and im looking at upgrading to the archos 5. a couple quick questions?
- does the headcam for the 604 work with an archos 5 (or can it somehow be converted)?
- i heard alot of complaints from 605 (and up) owners that archos made you buy additional plugins most considered necessary purchases, does the archos 5 have the same sales model?
- does the archos 5 use the same charging connector as the 604?
- i really dont like giving up hard-buttons for software button - any comments on using the interface?
Thanks!
question about 604/archos 5?
Re: question about 604/archos 5?
Headcam does not work. The 5 uses different connectors.
Yes, the plugin system still exists.
No, it does not use the same charging connector.

did the camera itself change in anyway? it cant be adapted for the 5?

Well, it can in a way. You would need to figure out what the various pinouts are and get a portable dvr dock.mmezo wrote:did the camera itself change in anyway? it cant be adapted for the 5?
Re: question about 604/archos 5?
but it wouldnt be a direct "get the archos 5 portable dvr dock, plug in archos 604 head cam to dock", id have to jury-rig an adapter from the 604 cam to the new archos 5 dvr dock pins?
archos - this is why you get crapped on by fans: you show no love to those of us who are already members of the archos family. if the camera wasnt actually updated, then archos is simply forcing existing customers to pay for something they already have.
i didnt mind when they went from STANDARD connectors on my av420 to their semi-proprietary connectors on the 604, but to have different connectors on every version is simply gratuitous bilking of customers - theres supposed to be a benefit for being a member of the "family" already, your old peripherals that havent been updated SHOULD WORK.
thats how you attract new customers and KEEP YOUR OLD ONES - by making it cost prohibitive to switch to another companies line rather than upgrade. instead, archos makes it cost as much or MORE than their competitors for existing customers to upgrade.
like i said - i started researching b/c i had a battery problem - i accepted they discontinued the battery and considered upgrading (so basically i actually considered paying 10X the price for a new device instead of a new battery). it wasnt until finding out my peripherals couldnt be used for no apparent reason that they lost me - had they simply said "well, it has new connectors, but the headcam (or whatever peripheral) will work if you do X, Y and Z" id still be a happy customer, instead of researching competitors.

Re: question about 604/archos 5?
Yeah that seems to be a recurring theme. The 5 was my first archos, although I love the device, it will probably be my last just because of the complete disregard for past customers.
To be fair, I think some people have somewhat unrealistice expectations. Yeah, it's pretty likely your dongle from a 4 year old product won't work. But there was a lot of stuff that people bought for their 605's that could have easily been made to work the 5. The slightly different proprietary connections are nearly sickening, although it doesn't affect me personally (yet), I know it will be an awfully big pill to swallow when I start looking to upgrade to the next device and they will have pulled the same crap. Having to buy everything I've already bought will likely send me in another direction.
A completely different machine? Fine, it only stands to reason that the old accessories won't work with it, but the 605 and the A5 aren't very different, they should definately be able to share. If they want to release a new product every year, fine....I guess, but they should make common components compatible on three year cycles at least.
Your fans don't stay fans very long when you abuse them as Archos is clearly doing from the 605 to the 5.

Re: question about 604/archos 5?
exactly.
and really, ive owned one product or another of theirs for nearly a decade now - whenever someone brought up comparable stuff i touted the archos product b/c the features were better (or whatever it was we were discussing). i wont anymore as i cant advocate and support a product from a company that doesnt support their customers.
whats funny is that unlike many, personally ive never had the "bad archos tech" experience and i usually thought their service was great, its their "leadership" that is lacking. however i did get the attitude i hear about so often in regard to this - but i cant blame the techs for being dismissive when they know they cant do anything to fix a product or support customers the company has made the conscious decision to abandon.
heave ho, and away we go.
