Is there still hope for this project? I thought it had been determined that hardware limitations made it all but impossible.

It's a combination. To get an idea look at the maemo proof of concept. Watch the gen6 and gen7 video side by side - just notice how much longer the gen6 takes. Probably a combination of low ram and running from the harddrive while the gen7 runs from the SSD mass storage.

That aside the 2.6.27 kernel doesn't boot properly on gen6 hardware. Someone with Linux Kernel hacking experience would need to have a look.

I'm not sure if I'm able to make this linux kernel boot.

Do you mean that you've already tried to boot 2.6.27 linux kernel on a gen6 ?

This means that they are waiting on someone (besides themselves) to do it. If you decide not to, then they'll wait for the next person who is willing and able to do that.

Have you read the OpenAOS blog? You might read that first (look specifically for the bits about Android) and that will tell you what he (and they) have done.

Can't let this die right.... So as many of you have said on this thread, the 6th gen devices just don't have sufficient hardware capabilities to run android software. But I found this today and thought I'd share:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/07/0 ... and-wince/

It has similar hardware with an Arm Cortex A8 and 256 mb ram... let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

hello all, i was just wondering if there was any news ?

i've seen that you guys were waiting for someone to port latest linux kernel for ARM cpu's....

Do you know the Nokia N900 ? it has the pretty same chip and hardware as the archos 5 gen6 !!!
an arm cortex a8 and 256mb of ram (with 768mb of swap if i remember) and is running a complete linux os called maemo. i've that phone, but the most important for you to know is that a guy called dj_steve is trying to port android for that device !

you should take a look here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58890

that is amazing, i have it working on mine and it rocks ! (froyo 2.2)

and i just wanted to say that because he and his team ported the 2.6.28 linux kernel for that device so if that helps ;)

Maemo/Mer is already running (albeit slowly) on Gen 6. Perhaps you can check the OpenAOS blog for more info on what's been done on the device?

Maybe 128 vs. 256 MB RAM is a factor?

But again, if you want to help, read the blog, get yourself up to date and then get on IRC with the OpenAOS guys and get stuck in! They're always glad to have knowledgeable new folks pitching in!

Good luck!

Michael
