1) i'm not sure yet, but you can change the disk :) and use unsigned code (i.e. dual boot os :D )

2) as long as you read the instructions (when published) carefully and are comfortable it'll not brick.

3) still being compiled.

any luck for 604 wifi users?

The principle could be applied to 604 wifi firmware, I think (provided that it's hackable to start with). The firmware isn't all that different. The problem is time, and getting the necessary hardware to the right people for testing and development. Do you want to volunteer yours? :)

sure why not? but please tell me in detail what should i do to test the hack thats being developed now?

the problem is that I've already bricked my 604wifi already with initial bootloader hack... and there is no way back :( so not sure we will risk other 604s ...

did u mean u broke ur 604w/f while testing the new hack on it?

yes that was initial tries to hack the gen4/gen5... but for gen4 there is no way back if something goes wrong...

Any chance you guys got USB Host with a USB keyboard/gamepad incorporated in since it's a custom kernel??

If I could use a mini keyboard like this:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/24/bran ... -keyboard/

and take notes with the archos, then i'd save a few hundred bucks over the nettops i've been checking out! 8)

(also seems like the archos would be perfect for nes/gameboy emulation 8) )

Of course, we already had USB keyboard and mouse support in the X server test image (see "openPMA we are not dead").

Well, we didn't mention it because being able to use your own kernel modules means that the device is hacked. At that point in time we didn't want to mention that publically.

The RealVideo plugin is only available in China. Not sure about the other two...

Oh, I'm sure it will be "some weeks", just like the last announcement said.

viewtopic.php?f=34&t=14909&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=80

How many weeks are in a thousand years again?

i personally think that openPMA for 605wifi started to die since the shock of archos' patch against the GFT.
arguing wont solve anything (it'll just un-motivate everybody).

i do think that your arguing skills can be of use (not saying that's your only skill),
if you can make up several e-mails complaining the hell out of archos not releasing the latest modified source-code on-line,
give them away simultainiously to people you know and have as many people send these e-mails to archos as possible.

try to make a point that having the latest code on-line can benifit people who dont like buying on-line.

with the latest source we can start finding holes in their code and possibly make progress...

whats more is that you'll possibly start to change peoples oppinions about you from:
l0t3ch - how low can you go!
to:
L0t3ch saves the day :D 8)

Yep -- that about did it for me. If the GFT hole had stayed available even for another few months, we could probably have got enough people interested to make it worth carrying on. But as soon as the patch was released -- particularly as the x05s auto-update unless you stop them -- it was obvious that there would soon be very few people left who would benefit from the work, and very few people with hackable units who could contribute to it.

If Archos were to release an official, open version of the firmware (unlikely), that may tempt me to dust off my C++ compiler. But I doubt anything else will.

this would be a very good idea for archos:

release a 'hackers edition' with GFT back, whilst removing all the software that makes archos so concerned.

that would be so easy for them to do.

and then put so many warnings on its download site that only few people would use the firmware!
^ that'll keep archos hapy.

and if they were to put a download counter on their next firmware and on the 'hackers edition' then they'll be able to know wether or not to make an open-source device next time.

then i'll definitally buy a 705WiFi as well!

Is there any update? I have my 605 on f/w 1.7. If the hack works on 1.7 could I be the beta tester then? Please let me know.
