Yikes stay away from this software its buggy as hell you might want to look into handbrake it does a better job.

Besides i have a quad core and handbrake its a multi-threaded app.

use dvd shrink or decriptor and to turn them into vob files then just move them over into the archos video file.

I use Smartripper to convert them to 1 Vob file up to 4 gigs 2 if I need to.

I set the directory for the rip directly on my archos because it only takes 20 minutes to half an hour.

then I start the rip.

That way you wont even have to bother with moving the file off your computer.

P.S. your archos needs to be in harddrive mode. windows mode sucks anyway.

To answer the question that you actually asked:

Keep in mind you also need AnyDVD, not just CloneDVDMobile -

Anyway, put in your disc. After AnyDVD reads it, start up Mobile.

Select the 'type' of file you want to create: Generic Divx

Tell it where to look for it: in the VideoTS folder on the disc itself

Continue until you get to the screen which allows you to select the screen resolution. Select '720 x (whatever, 404, 480, depends on the disc)'

Slide the slider 'quality' bar down until the estimated filesize is approximately 1 gigabyte, maybe slightly larger.

Give it a name and a location to save the file on your hard drive.

Tell it to start.

That's it.

After it's done (roughly 20 minutes or so), simply use Windows Explorer to copy the file into the Video directory on your Archos.

Enjoy.

This is the part that confuses me. What do you mean by "Depends on the disc"? How can you tell? Thanks for any advice.

so widescreen DVD's always have a resolution of 720 X 404 and full screen would always be 720 X 480? Does 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 make any difference?

i use it, works the best, hands down.. fast, and looks great@
only trouble is, dont go over 720, and dont go over 1400KBS... (there is a bug, ive addressed it many times, and they just delete my topics, very shady, but the software does work great, its fast, the fastest ive used, and looks great when hooked upto my plamsa as well)
what i use is the same profile as the ZEN VISION W, then you will have NO PROBLEMS...
and you do not have to use anydvd, you can use DVD43 link is: http://www.dvd43.com/
its lite, its free, and works great!

use them together, first open DVD43, open clonedvdMOBILE
and set the profile to ZEN VISION W, chose your rez size (640byX 340byX) set your bitrate, i like 1100-1500KBS myself
chose where you want to save it (i do desktop)
then, after its done, usually around 25-35 minutes for whole movie)
i right click, and send to archos (i made a send to)

goto C, docs, user, SENDTO folder, put the short cut of your archos/movies there... works great!

Thanks for the info, but I am still confused on resolution. What I am trying to avoid is taking the resolution of a DVD and resizing in in the compression process. I have actually not been overly pleased at the quality of rips so far and am wondering if I am missing something in transition.

you are not satisfied with the quality of the rips when viewed on the archos or when watched on a tv? my rips look great on both...

what you need to change is the bitrate setting up it a bit... around 1500kbs...

im on the road now.... first nesaage typed on the archos.. woooo hooooo

If you just copy the .vob files (and have purchased that optional codec) they'll run just fine with no loss of resolution or detail.

That said, I haven't seen a situation where I couldn't be made happy with a good divx/xvid encode. If your bitrate is high enough, you could possibly even get away without shrinking it. This weekend I tried converting my Dead Like Me box sets and even at 870 kb/s it looked just peachy. Turning a 1 GB episode into a 370 MB one without losses I can notice just means I can cram three times the videos on it. 8)

Sorry, but if you use that profile, you are not getting full DVD resolution.

If you want full DVD resolution, use the Generic DIVX and choose the 720 resolution.
