I have just brought a 605 160 gb off Ebay. (1) When charging, if the unit is completely shut down the charge light never starts flashing, it just glows constant (this is after 24+ hours). But (2), if the unit is in sleep mode (power light on-black screen) the charge light will eventually start flashing. I have tried charging with a USB cable only, both through a port in a computer and through an AC to USB converter. In both situations, upon unplugging the unit the battery indicator will show all bars for only a moment then drop down to three bars. Is this a sign of a worn battery, or something worse? I don't feel up to the task of changing the battery myself so if you could direct me to a business that will do this that would be great.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Can't help you with finding someone to do a battery replacement, but I will tell you to NEVER charge the battery with the 605 completely shut off.

Also, does the charge indicator ever fluctuate back up to more than three bars while you are using it? If not, yes, it is most likely a worn battery, I would imagine.

Thanks SHADO,
I have taken the initiative and am getting the battery replaced (found a guy on Ebay that will also replace the hard drive <250 gb!>). I had no idea that the 605 needed to be on, is this info in the manual? BTW, when the battery meter level drops it always stays down.

Thanks again!

Good to hear that you found someone to replace the battery (or the hard drive)! Is he from Wisconsin, by any chance? The reason I ask is that there is a guy near me that replaces the drives too (don't recall if he does batteries too). These folks are few and far between, because it isn't as simple as just throwing in another drive.

I don't recall if the info about the 605 needing to be left turned on while charging is in the manual or not. But I know that it has been mentioned in these forums a zillion times. By trying to charge the 605 with it turned off somehow bypasses the circuitry that determines when the battery is finished charging. Then it can overcharge, damaging the battery. Also, don't leave the battery charging 24/7. Even though it theoretically stops charging once full, there is still a small trickle charge keeping it topped up. This small extra charge being applied over long periods of time can also damage the battery. I have read here of rare instances where this constant small charge being applied over long periods has caused the battery to actually physically swell in size and put pressure on the hard drive, which then doesn't allow the 605 to function. And if you don't plan on using your 605 for extended periods of time (say a month or two), it is best to store it with about a 40% (or so) charge, rather than fully charged. This will extend the overall life of the battery (according to the Battery University website).

Anyway, hope you enjoy your new toy! :)

This Ebay "buy it now" auction is where I had the battery installed.
He had a battery on hand and since he installs the hard drive for free he charged me $ 20 for the battery with installation. I don't know if he will only install a battery, if he stocks batteries, let alone what he will charge. You'll probably have to contact him for that information. BTW, he is in the Chicago area.
Good Luck!
I hope he can help you!

Thanks for the link! I will keep it for future reference in case I can't find a battery elsewhere when both my batteries need replacing. Maybe he knows of a source, or stocks them himself. Fortunately, replacing the battery in my 30GB 605s is about a ten minute job, easily doable by myself.

So you had the larger drive put in too? Nice! Hope the new battery holds a decent charge for you. On a similar note, I was an early adopter of the Microsoft Zune (bought 2 and still use them). About a year ago I decided that the batteries in both had worn enough that I should probably replace them (being 3 years old or so). Bought a couple batteries off of ebay and installed them myself. Turned out that the original old batteries held a better charge than the new ones.

Would like to hear if you are pleased with this guy's service when you get your 605 back.
