How long time have you been using your 204?

Yup unless your hard drive is broken, then there should be some way to take it out, connect it to a computer somehow and retrieve your files..

For example using a 1.8" USB hard drive case.

Post some closeup pictures or post a video or something of your problem, that might help other people in this forum help you. Like suggest where you should use a screw driver or something. That is if you are sure that you don't want to send it to Archos to repair if it's really broken.

I don't know what kind of the drive is in 204, but if it's ZIF you must have ZIF to 2,5'' 44 pin IDE convertor, look on ebay. Then you must take out your disk and connect it to the laptop. Using some sort of linux live cd or USB edition, you will be able to copy the content on USB storage drive or burn it on CD/DVD. Or solution above with USB hard drive case is much simpler.
