does anyone know how to mod a 404 to run off just usb. i recently had my battery die and have been switching my battery between my old archo(used for storage brkn lcd) and my new one thats in good condition. i was wondering if anyone knows away to modify the archos 404 to make it work just on usb . i kept the connector and wires from the battery just in case .

You mean you want to power your Archos off the USB cable w/o any battery at all? :shock: In general battery-powered devices require a minimally functional battery to run properly. A battery, even mostly deceased, functions like a big capacitor to smooth out powerline ripples and absorb spikes. Of course a PC power supply should put out a pretty clean 5V, so maybe...

I assume you tried it and it did not work. How about adding a big capacitor?

not sure about a capacitor - but maybe a bridge rectifier my do it..

is it really worth the aggro and RISK of killing your machine, the cells are pretty cheap to replace - new mp3 techonology does them for under £20 including p+p.
also its not rocket science to replace the cells all you need is a small philips screwdriver, something very thin and stong (store cards seem to work better than credit cards) the cells are only connected with a pop on connector no soldering required. 20mins max if you take your time
