what do you mean by a micro? it has to be some pin that gets grounded for this to register as a host if anyone has a docking station to poke around with and post exactly how its wired up next to the usb cable i think it would be a lot of help to everyone. also keep in mind that this is based off of what we think the pin out is, were not EXACTLY positive on it as of now because the mod hasn't worked yet -.-

the main idea behind this mod is so we can fully utilize all the ports that come out of the usb connector port on the bottom of the archos. it has been just confirmed that the usb HOST mod works, there are svidio, charging, IR remote, audio out, composite video out, and a serial port that we don't know what can do yet. so there are a lot of things possible if they all work. look @ the first page and you will get a short run down of all the connectors and what they do.

Hello,
I'm reporting back from the holidays.
I'm glad that so many people found interest in this topic.
Like amdathlon3200plus64, I think that the port should be used more.
Even if ARCHOS don't want to support us, we can do something on our own.
In the following drawing I recommend to use the "IRC In" as a communication-interface between different car-radios and the ARCHOS.
The idea:
Almost every car-radio-manufacterer have a "CD-Charger IF". We could use this as a source to connect the ARCHOS.
Unfortunately, we don't know the serial port of ARCHOS yet. So we have no other chance than using "IRC In".
The buttons signals by the remote control can be listened in and released without agreement by ARCHOS.
The "CD-Charger IF" commands are mostly known (Alpine, Becker, Blaupunkt, Grundig, Kenwood, Panasonic, Sony, JVC).
The conversion can be done by the help of a Microcontroller.
Furthermore a DC/DC Converter and et voilà: We have a wonderful ARCHOS-Adapter.
Now we have created a unipolar port (from car-radio to ARCHOS), that's why the car-radios cannot screen the current ARCHOS-information.
Well, ARCHOS is going to be an extern screen, then.
The ARCHOS can stay in the glove box when you own a radio with a videodisplay.
Now it's the interested developers turn to get in touch with that!

i have tried the mod with just the USB host, but i can't seem to get it to work conistently, i have only gotten it to work twice a tried a few dozen times.
Is this mod working consistently for somebody?

Does anyone know how I could make/get an SPDIF adapter? I have no DIY skills, but I really want to get digital output from my 504 without the bulky DVR Station. My guess is that it would be easier than a USB adapter, but I don't know.

pin E is the spdif connector pin, all i think you need to do is get a female connector and solder the + terminal to pin E and solder the - terminal to Ground which is pin C look in the earlier posts to figure out how the pin out is and how to "count" the pins ;) good luck i don't know if you have to touch the resistor tho any ideas people?

SPDIF is a digital port but it's an audio port. The other side of the connection must understand that protocol. So it's not possible.
You cannot use it as another alternative for USB. More details for SPDIF are on this Wikipedia Link.

I didn't mean that I wanted an alternative to USB, I simply meant that it might be easier for me to make with no DIY experience.

I know that SPDIF is a digital audio protocol. I want to use it to bypass the DAC in the Archos and send the signal to a separate high end DAC (I'm an audiophile). My understanding is that I would just have to open up the proprietary USB cable that comes with the player, solder some hookup wire to pins E and C and to a female RCA connector, and close it back up. Is this correct? Are there any resistors or anything else I need? I repeat, I have never done anything DIY. I just (sort of) know how to solder.

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The signal from Pin E goes to an IC (MKRA) and not directly to SPDIF. I assume that this is an Operation Amplifier.
Sadly, I couldn't find information neither about a so called IC, nor trace the way of the signal to the SPDIF :(.
Maybe someone else can help?

Hello,
I was hoping that someone was into doing the Car Kit-idea I recommended.
Unfortunately, people are scary to join or there is no interest for a ARCHOS-plug.

Since I will never know that, I have to do it on my own.

The whole concept works as I described before.
In my current car, there is a radio by Sony.
Since I use this car for a short time, I will build a CD-Charger-Emu.

There won't be no control of the ARCHOS first.

In the couple next month I will get the Toyota-Auris with a Navigation-System. That's where I want to make a complete control over the car-radio real.

Here are the first pictures of the car kit:

Yes admathlon3200plus64, sometimes the complicated devices are easy.
As a basic for the Car Kit I have the project GNUnilink.
This made my work a lot easier, since I just had to add the interface to the ARCHOS.
On the link, you can not just find the Source Code, but a Hex-file that can be loaded over an easy programming-device in PIC.
I give you the schematic.
I will report back as soon as I assembled the hardware.
