Hey everyone,

I thought I would devise a spreadsheet for all the formats (audio and video) as to what the 4th generation
devices can play. You can check the spreadsheet featured here for your favourite format and it will tell you if
it can play it, and what bitrates it works with, etc.

Included is audio and video formats. Image formats on its way!

Enjoy

No problem at all! The video sheet will be on its way soon. Then you could maybe make this a sticky or
something as I think a lot of people could benefit with this information, especially if they are looking
for a good format to stick with.

NICEEEEEE..... ive made this sticky!! please add the video format supported to this thread.

With the amount of stickys now im gona look at making a sub thread containing all the stickys to clean the board up a bit.

Excellent work thanks for the effort!!

Thanks this is awesome..

I wonder if "MPEG Standard" should have a (MPEG 1 and MPEG2 format) add-on if there is space just after it. Cause from that list it might be someone would think that Mpeg1 is not supported..

And I wonder if "Apple Quicktime Format" should have a specification of which versions of Apple Quicktime that is supported, since the latest is h264 based and older ones are Mpeg4 based isn't it? And the same with the "MPEG4 Standard (Quicktime Compliant)" which can also be Mpeg4 and h264 type video in there?

It's very interesting to see the kinds of bitrates and framerates that are supported..

Yeah standard mpg 1 has become quite redundant and MPEG 1 m1v is completely unrecognisable as a format on these devices..., I have taken what you said into consideration and added the compression type settings into the table... Looks alot clearer now. I might be adding individual codec information too on the supported formats...

Nice reference guide. A couple of things to add...

No quarter-pixel and GMC support for AVI.

No support for QuickTime .MOV with Sorenson 3 codec. In fact, my 604 just reboots (!) whenever it encounters one.

Not to be the doubting Thomas, but where did these specs come from. Did archos provide or did some one test these? The only reason I ask is when I see the bitrate for H.264.

4.5 mbps seems very high for a portable device. This codec can be very CPU intense and I just wonder about it. Same with the AAC audio.

I really hope that the 04 and soon to be 05 players can play H.264 at these rates. My AV goal is to rip my DVD's to a home server and stream to my TV using my XBOX 360 and one day the ArchosTV. It seems that at 3 mpbs the movies are as close the the orginal DVD that you can get. I would then like to copy the movies to my 05 gen Archos for "on the go" viewing.

Before I made the chart I went to the trouble of testing each format personally. I can assure you that these figures are correct, as thoroughly checked by myself.

4Mbps does seem high but the simple thing is at that bitrate, it just worked. Thats about it really.

Also a standard VOB movie is about 8Mbps, and it handles it fine.

The less the compression the less strain on the CPU, as there is less discrepencies to decode. Could be wrong though. All it means is the hard drive needs to seek more. :)

Thanks Nukey,

Many Thanks for the reply and all the testing you did. Why Archos didn't provide such numbers is beyond me.

Any Chance that this chart is the same for Gen5 players?

Ok, here is an update.

I am waiting for my plugins to come through from Archos (exchanged my 504 for a 605 wifi 80GB) and when that happens I will be creating the same topic in the 605Wifi section, for audio, video and images.

You just bumped a thread that's two and a half years old lol. The link is probably long gone by now.
