Since the actual problems and changes with the Archos G9 80 (specially the RAM and the 1,2Ghz) I'm searching a good alternative. And this appears in this future model of ZTE (T98). What's your opinion?

Nah, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 has AC3 and an excellent movie player app with .srt subtitle support. Basically, anything with Exynos in it would be a better alternative.

Well, ZTE model has a lot of better specifications (Tegra 3, Android honeycomb, 1G RAM, 1.3GHz, 3G, ...) I don't think that it could be compare with the 7'' Samsung old tablet. Only the price is the doubt.

This link have a little more info: http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/27/zte- ... potted-in/

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the new 7 inch tablet, not the old one.

What about the new Viewsonic Viewpad 7x ?
I would really like to hear what everyone thinks of it.
Especially as it is a true 3g phone as well.
Viewsonic MSRP is $379 and will be available in October.

Woot.com has the Motorola Xoom for $349 w/ onboard 32gb!
There will be increased competition.. For now the kindles aren't proven ready for prime time but that could change when they develop the O/S.. In the next year competition will probably heat up so Archos may have to rethink their pricing. In the 7-10" form factor there are already 1/2 dozen major brnads around in the same price range.

1. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7/7" is not scheduled to be released in the US - see here http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/02/gotta-see-eurotrip/

2. The Acer Iconia A100 7" with Tegra 2 and running HC 3.2 - super fast, solid build quality - $ 329.00 - the battery is a little skimpy - 5-6 hours but otherwise great device

So far, the tablets mentioned can be considered as alternatives to each other. But the only way a tablet can be considered as an Archos alternative is if it also had the same media capabilities and aimed at the same demographic. There's still no tablet that can actually be considered as Archos alternatives right now.

So how about some comparisons? What does the Archos do that the others do not? And what do the others do that the Archos does not do?

As has been repeatedly mentioned all over the Archos forums. Media playback capability is Archos's main selling point, and something none of the other tablets have been capable so far. As is, the TF2 just barely keeps up with a Gen8. The only way you can consider a tablet as an Archos alternative is if you can find one that can actually compare to it, otherwise it's just another android tablet. Processing speed may be in question, but the Archos can run any android app other tablets can, but none of the other tablets can handle videos. I've actually been looking for alternatives for the past six months and there have been none so far. The people that actually want tablets for what they were advertised (Tablets were originally touted as media comsumption devices) skipped the Tegra2 generation due to lack of video support. Closest thing to an alternative is the kal-el, so that's what we're waiting reviews for.

OK, I am just trying to learn. What is wrong with the Tegra 2? What kind of video does it not work with? I have been looking at some other tablets in the 7 inch size that use the Tegra 2 and have not seen any video problems. But, maybe I am not looking at the right kind. They have been able to play all the stuff I normally would use it for. What am I missing?

In particular I am looking at the new Viewpad 7X That retails for $379 and plays the following video.
-S1080p
-H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX
-4/5 Video Decode 1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode

plus has full phone capabilities:
2G GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz
3G HSDPA/UMTS 850, 1900, 2100 MHz

Does the Archos G9 do all that? I don't know.

Like I said, I am just trying to learn so I can make an informed decision on what I will end up buying. Which ever one it is, I will probably be buying a few to give away to some family members for Christmas.

Sorry, people kept suggesting to me to get the Tegra 2 but a coworker has one and brings it everyday so i have tried it first hand, and i still prefer my Gen8 A101 over it. I do want a tablet with the same build quality but it's just a pretty paperweight if i can't play my anime. It's no loss for him since i rarely see him actually use it, and whenever i borrowed it, it doesn't actually have any videos on it, my 101 gets more use out of it than he does with his.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2UOwxXZvaA

This is what 720p anime is like on the Asus Transformer, the new firmware update didn't help. nVidia may have the superior h264 support in their GPU's (My ATI5850HD took over a year of driver updates before it played decently, nVidia GPU's worked from day1), but didn't put that in their Tegra2. Also note that they've listed the Transformer to be capable of 1080p, but it can't even handle 720p. iPods are supposed to be able to play 720p, but my iPod 4th Gen can't even handle 480p. Just because it says 1080p on the box doesn't mean you'll actually be able to play the 1080p videos you have on it.

If there's a tablet out there that can play anime, i'd jump on it. The Gen9 A101 i've been waiting for turned out to delayed 'til next year and i'm looking for other tablets that can do the same.

I know 1080p is moot since these things don't have that kind of resolution. But what i'm after is compatibility with my media library. I have almost 2000 videos in my harddrive waiting to be watched right now and there is no way i'm going to convert them everytime i wanted to watch something on the tablet. With the current tablets, you have to leave the PC running overnight transcoding so you'll have videos to put on them the next day. On the Archos, i just dragged and dropped.

The HTC Flyer 300 dollars is great. Dual cameras, GPS, Bluetooth, USB host, microsd, plays most 720p vids just fine, Active digitizer for drawing/ note taking, and honeycomb coming soon. Also the Arnova Tabs, Kindle Fire, and Nook Color if your looking for something really cheap. Also Haipad M9 with is only 150 dollars.

I agree on the Flyer. It is a keeper at $300 :)

Apparently a huge seller for Best Buy now at $300.
